since i quit gigging, the only times any of my instruments are in cases is when they are being retired, or being transported.. everything is usually hanging on a wall, for quick / easy access.
I've had tripping issues with stands, so they are not allowed anywhere near me, or my gear.

1 Jazz and 1 P-Bass on stands at all times!
Normally the P is the one that stays plugged in. Always ready for ME!
The rest of the Herd are in the 4 Bass Corral or in the Bass Closet Cased!

Some (62 P, 64P, 65J, and the 77J) are usually in their cases, one (72P) hanging on the wall within easy reach.

case, seen so many stands get knocked over. my guitar player recently with his 3k martin. told him to put it away, he says have a stand. same night, someone trips a cable, guitar falls over. cases all day
Stages are chaotic...People can be lumbering dolts...people who don't belong on stage (family members, friends of bands members, etc) somehow manage to get on stage.
As a result, 99% of the time my basses go in the case during set breaks..even my iPad gets removed from the stand it's on and put away.
Stuff is expensive.

I leave them out in stands, on top of cases, tables etc. I like to look at them, and out of sight out of mind, there are no kids here so they're safe. I do find my cat on top of one them occasionally but she's light.
The one bass I keep out of it's case is a very fun to play Squire Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz bass.

It cost me $60 in a ridiculous Craigslist deal. Sold to me by a 20 something stoner who just wanted to get high. A pretty good deal considering a new one is about $450 from Guitar Center.
I laugh now cause the strings (D'Addario Black Tape Wounds) cost almost as much as the bass.
I find with all my instruments (electric and acoustic guitars, basses, mandolins) keeping guitars in their cases keeps them from damage and definitely preserves string life.

Stands, I normally have two basses but lately I have been gigging with only one, but I still use a stand...
