Do you use fEARful?

Those exist within nearly every brand's loyalty base.

I took some time away from TB for just such a reason, because even though I never suggested a fEARful as a solution for anyone who wasn't looking for a 2 or 3 way cab, if anyone asked a serious question about the fEARfuls, in answering you'd be met with attacks and snide comments. If you commented on the capabilities (how much wattage I use, the volume, etc.) people would act like you're lying or falsely over stating. All from people who have never heard or seen the cabinet.

It is sad to see such a thing. I believe that you shouldn't be able to denounce something unless you or someone close has had personal experience with the item. And I believe that forums should stay positive and provide useful feedback, such as negative personal experience rather than attacks. After all; we're just a community all trying to help each other rock out :bassist:

Yeah it happens and they talk among themselves on the thread as if that TBer wasn't even there too. Anyway, way cool. Yeah, then you defiantly should build one. BTW, sometimes you can fudge the demission's a little more than some the FF fanboys want you to believe. For example, some cab designs have room to add a mid driver or not - which means the demission's can obviously be fudged a little. Just start with a good driver and build the cab around it. Oh have you seen/played with any cab designing software yet?

I'd imagine they could be changed around a little. After all, there is also a Tube version with different dimensions. And I have heard of some but never actually used any. I have a friend who actually had a few programs; if he can get his hard drive back then he'll show them to me.

Noticing that as well

I don't have a link on hand - maybe someone can post a quick link for free software for you. Anyway, I'm getting out of this thread and I wish you the very best. :)

In the FAQ at the top of the Amps forum there are links to all kinds of building resources, including design freeware. Greenboy's website and forum have even more directly relevant resource links, and a whole crew of people who have actually build the cabs themselves and made all the mistakes so you don't have to. You can expect a healthy dose of "just follow the plans" though...often for very good reasons.

If you want to jockey dimensions you either want to keep internal volume very close, as the Cube does, or understand how and why to change port tuning. There's definitely wiggle room, but then you're into the "Y" part of DIY. When I built mine there was no set crossover design, and the dimensions also got changed taking feedback from early adopters into account. Mine still sounded nice though.

The optional tweeters take up very little internal volume, and the midrange options include instructions for adjusting internal mid chamber volume with foam spacers. Again, all of this stuff is addressed on GB's website. ;)

Good luck, and have fun, whichever way you roll.

No.

You can't build a stand alone fEARful without a mid driver - it would be a sub without the mid - and the mid lives in a separate chamber so it has no impact on the volume/tuning of the main box.

Moreover, if you change the overall dimensions you will face many redesign challenges [tuning of the main chamber, bracing scheme, handle placement, driver spacing, et cetera] and risk obviating the modular nature of the line.

The only "obvious" notion arsing from your comments is you have no idea what you talking about.

This is probably is why you have found many people ignore your comments.

Just saying... :bassist:

I would love it if we could just play thru what we want and be happy. No one cab is perfect for all bassists. When someone asks for an opinion about a cab, try not to overtly slag another guy's preference and try to accept that other peoples' opinions are just as valid as anyone elses.

As someone new to looking into custom cab information....this is very frustrating to find decent threads that didn't turn into bickering and cult like fanaticism. This thread was going so well until the last few pages turned into the same as it always does.

It always seems to be the same people saying the same over and over again on threads dated back multiple years.

It's also annoying how almost every thread that someone asks an opinion of comparing cab X to cab Y...the same people always say to get a Fearful regardless of the OPs guidelines on budget and other considerations.

After doing many many (way too many) hours of reading on these forums, I ended up going with Don at LDS to build me a 15/6. I chose him because he has many years of cab building experience, is from the same neighborhood I grew up in, and happens to be located near me currently. Plus after talking to him, he seems to be very down to earth and knowledgeable. Plus there are plenty of good reviews and pictures of his work here on Talkbass.

Of course since I am a gear nut, I already am thinking about a pair of 12/6/1s or 12/6/1 and 12 sub solution. I would be very interested if anybody near Seattle has a Fearful 15/6 for me to do a comparison. Not to start an argument here on Talkbass, but to get an honest comparison (to my own ears, which is all that really matters) to help me decide if I go Fearful or not for the 12/6/1s I'm thinking about. I like nice things and have no problem spending more money on higher end equipment, but really trying to figure out if the extra cost really sounds that much better or not.

I'd like to thank everybody, even the annoying people, for having posted plenty of reading information to keep me busy doing things besides work and other things I should be doing....keep it coming.

Check out the users map on the GB site. Someone also had an LDS 15/6 build at one of the GTGs I attended up there, I think he lives in Kirkland. I'll PM you if I can figure out who it was.

Being an Acoustic Control fanboy, all I can say is that fEARful doesn't use vintage electrons, so it couldn't possibly sound as good. I'm pretty sure the new 360 uses vintage electrons, too, since it sounds even better. Match that!

... but, building stuff is fun, so I might build one someday, just to do it. Then I would use one at least sometimes and probably like it. Until then, I'm off to debate the merits of OEM transistors that were made by gnomes in the woods over the crap transistors that are made now.

I traded my LDS 15/6 to Balog who traded me his 12/6 which he got from you, Charlie. He lives somewhere in northern Washington. Could that be him?

Passinwind & Bassist - thank you. I was bummed I missed the recent GTG.

I'll be getting my 15/6 soon and just wanted to A/B it to a Fearful to see if I will go with other options or Fearful for the 12/6/1s I may purchase next.

When it comes to purchasing anything I usually go to medium or high end because I value quality and don't mind paying a premium. I do start to weigh in cost per end result when the price climbs up...meaning if mid costs 500 and high costs between 1,000 and 10,000...is something better enough to justify an increase in cost between 1000, 5000, and 10,000.
This is a very general statement and a very personal choice that some people make when trying to decide what to purchase.

So much good info on this site...just unfortunate there seems to be so much negativity and arguing that goes along with it. No different than any other internet forum where people are passionate about something I guess.

Looking forward to getting my new cab...I'm sure it will open up a whole new world of sounds that come out of anything I've played up to this point. Right on.

I have a 15/6 that I finished about a month ago. I'm in Graham, Wa. Just a little south of Puyallup. Send me a PM. We'll arrange a GTG.
