Do you use fEARful?

With due respect, this design did not originate like that. I watched this thing morphi from experimentations on a PA cab, to a box design more suitable for bass, to trying many different components and mating them together different ways, to having a product, to refining that product, to refining it some more, etc.

All this was put out there freely for anyone who wanted to take advantage of such a thing. It has since gone on to even bigger and better things.

It had a lot more "organic" beginning than what your take on it might suggest.

Didn't have a take on it and wasn't implying it to be something it was or wasn't, thanks for the enlightenment. A very informative answer.

It's public and it's free. You can build a few and use them, no charge. You also misspelled Sadowsky (again), and are perhaps trolling? :D

There are no royalties on the fEARful designs. Not everyone considers maximum business profit to be the only way to disseminate useful ideas—amazing, huh?

Any other questions?

There's a report function and if you feel that I'm trolling, go for it. Everyone else has managed to give insightful and informative answers without getting emotional or feeling slighted in some way except for you. But thanks for the spell check.

Multi-driver, crossed cabs for bass are not new, but Greenboy saw the enhanced potential of designing one around the 3015LF and 3012LF long x-max drivers, which are relatively new and take the whole concept another step forward.

...

Indeed they are not, many have used both passive and active PA type speakers before the latest trend in full range cabs. And I bought my 15 + 12/6/tweeter bass rig 11 years ago ...

I would be surprised really if things hsven't moved on since then with new materials and elements, and new cabinet designs, so no surprise if fEArful has something worth looking into.

I voted "yes" even though I'm technically playing Greenboy's "Fearless" cabs, not "fEARful" cabs. Why? Because they sound fantastic with acoustic and electric bass - and do so in a great form factor, which makes them my ultimate "one-cab" carry for gigging. These were built by Joseph Hawley ("jHAWK").

My Greenboy Audio Fearless 210 can take 900+ watts @ 4ohms, weighs 46 pounds and gets as loud as a good 410. Excellent mobile form factor. Good for when there is no house PA support.

My Fearless 110 takes 500+ watts @ 8ohm, is as loud as a good 210 and weighs 31 lbs. Sounds the same as the F210. Easy to get stuck in a box when you're only considering old technology.

Here's the deal...Greenboy wanted to build a cab for himself using the 3015lf and a mid driver, but he doesn't like building cabs himself, so he uploaded the plans on here so folks who can build cabs could try it. It was well received, so he designed a couple more around different speakers Eminence was coming out with. The idea snowballed and a group of indie builders around the nation decided to start building them and pay Greenie a licensing fee out of fairness, plus they're now building a new series of cabs Greenie designed but he didn't upload the plans.
This, along with other posts, pretty much sums it up.
But to add a bit to it:
Greenie originally had no desire to set up a manufacturing or licensing company.
As his original designs became more popular, there were people deviating from the plans but still calling the end result "fEARfuls". Being the "proud papa" of the designs, this (quite naturally) irritated him so, starting with Leland Crooks/Speaker Hardware, he began setting up his network of Authorized Builders, all of whom agree not to deviate from any fundamental aspects of the designs.

He used a business model similar to BFM's, with two notable exceptions: He does not charge for the fEARful plans/specs and the plans/specs for his later designs are only available to the ABs.

I'd really love to try one before shelling out the cash for the drivers. Unfortunately, there seems to be only one person with a fearful here in Italy, and this person is pretty far away from me not to mention impossible to contact.
I still intend to try building one anyway; i've always wanted a '66 since i've heard of them here, but the cost would be too high, and frankly ATM i don't need that much cab. A 15/6/1 seems like the best choice, i order to add another 15/6 or 15 sub to it when needed.
Or i could start with a cheaper 12/6 for rehearsals/home, in order to see if it's really my thing. Tonally speaking, is there much difference between the 12/6 and the 15/6 - 15/6/1 - 1515 ? The 1212/6 sounds like a viable choice too.

The only thing different between a 12/6/1, 15/6/1 or a 1515/66/1 is that the bigger you go the louder they get..... Tone does not change :-) ~Elliot

+1

Thanks. Might go for a 12/6 cube and add a 15/6/1 to it later. Is there a reason besides cost to use a sub version? Also, do you know of any online seller in europe that stocks fearful-usable parts? I tried filling my cart on Speakerhardware and ended up with 250 $ on shipping. lol

If you are using an 18sound mid driver, it will keep up with two woofers, if you have switchable mid padding. So you can save some money there. The down side is if you go with a sub, you do not have two stand alone cabs.

I don't know if it helps you, in Italy... one builder reported one place to get parts from Invalid Link Removed

Noted. If by my ungladness you felt I slighted, I am sorry. I need to show greater forbearance. As for emotion, I hope the morning finds you refreshed.

If my answers were unhelpful, that is beyond my control, as all the information I provided was 100% correct and in direct response to your questions. Feel free to report any of my posts. :p

So out of the 11,600 or so viewers of this thread, 116 have said they use fEARful. It's pretty safe to assume that the rest do not. That gives us approximately one percent who use fEARful. Of course, there are over 200,000 users who have neither viewed the thread or voted in it. So one percent may be high.

I'd say 1% is VERY high.
Really the numbers don't matter, personal satisfaction is most important.
Did the people who bought in (to anything) get what they wanted?
Like said before talkbass is a small subset of bass players, who are a small subset of musicians, who are a small subset of the population as a whole.
The poll is telling though. It measures the number of people curious enough to vote. What that means is something else entirely...

Another thing the GB did was to take advantage of the neodymium drivers' light weight by designing with thinner than usual panels with internal bracing to create a lighter cabinet. I don't recall seeing that done before - everything was 3/4" baltic birch. Now I have seen some custom makers offering designs with 12 mm stock and alternate materials, e.g. Okoume, Italian Poplar. While those materials may have been used in other designs, the FF DIYers were the first I had seen use them.

Considering the commotion that takes place on Internet forums, I thought the whole thing was really quite extraordinary. It educated a lot of people about some acoustic fundamentals. It was not without its rough spots. A little learning is a dangerous thing.

As a 15/6 user for about 3 years, I can safely say a 15/6 will cover any gig a 410 would cover, and a bit more. A 12/6 is like a conventional 115 or 210.
