Do your kids play bass?

paid for piano lessons for my daughter when she was young, then in 7th grade she asked if she could play upright in the school orchestra. So we went down to KC Strings and picked up an old Kay C1 Orchestra model, and she went on to go to state every year in high school. We did play together some in youth worship, me on ebg and her on upright. EBG and upright can sound pretty sweet together. I've "borrowed" her Kay a few times. She now has three college degrees, and is now married and studying for chiropractic boards at the moment ...

Oh, she can read, I can't ...

Heck yeah! I started teaching my son guitar and bass around age 10-12. He started playing bass in church and soon passed me in physical ability to play. He wanted to play drums, so I bought him a 1962 model 4 piece Ludwig Jazz kit. He got pretty good at drums. He got into guitar, and got very good at guitar.

Years passed, and he got into bluegrass. Mandolin. Now he's the lead singer in a bluegrass band; Flat, Broke, & Lonesome, & I play upright bass in that band.

*I wish.* My girl is a very good acoustic guitar player and has come a great long way in a short time taking piano lessons, and my son is a concert/marching percussionist but doesn’t feel confident on drum kit. I have suggested playing with them several times but they just don’t seem interested. Guess that says something about me as a father-I think they think I’d be critical, when in truth I would enjoy the heck out of it no matter how it turned out.

Edit: my daughter thinks bass is a simpler instrument compared to guitar. I’m a better lead player than her on bass or guitar, but she’s a much better strummer than me.

My youngest son, Hunter Robinson, is quite the bassist and guitarist. He went on the road with my older son Ben for a couple years as his bassist, and used to double with our band P-51. And actually, Ben filled in more on bass more than a couple of times with the Trop-Rock band I used to play with. Hunter's waiting on us to put together another band. Ben is currently playing guitar with Preacher Stone. That's Hunter in this video playing one of my old Foundations.

If your band is P-51, you should use a Mustang bass.

My oldest son plays bass, keys, mandolin and drums. He also has a degree in vocal performance. He sings in a community choral group and does a bit of conducting all while working on his PhD in mathematics!

I took him to a jam at a local club when he was home at winter break.

David Bass Feb 2014.jpg

So this is my son David. He is the reason I'm playing bass today. My bass career began in high school (I was in a pretty active "combo") and then I took a ~40 year hiatus (while I pursued a career and raised a family) and I picked it back up at about 55 years old. That was a few years ago. I re-started on his old beginner bass and amp after the kids left home. :)

My son grew up seeing me on stage, at festivals, weddings and other events and he noticed that on occasion I'd get free meals, drinks, kindness that wasn't offered to the general public.

I always make a joke about it, but it's true - the way I made my kid a musician was, I told him directly: "Don't touch my f'n guitars."

When he was a 8 or 9 he could already rock out.

My son is now 19 and we have recently started playing in a band together.
(performing Grateful Dead Music - it's called "Ted & Company.")
We have our first gig at the end of March.

I started this thread cause my FB feed fed me a memory of my kid doing his best McCartney impression...

Do you play music with your kid(s)?

3 sons, ages 31, 27 and 24........ all play bass, among other instruments. Oldest is in 2 bands: a metal band and a country band. Just works for him, lol. The other 2 played together in high school jazz and entertainment bands and can sight read plus play by ear. Do they play anymore? Nope. Life got in the way. Hopefully they'll come 'round soon....

My daughters love to sing. They both love messing with my keyboard. Ive gotten them their own drum sticks, a glockenspiel, bongos, and an acoustic guitar so far. Ages are 6 and 4 now. My oldest daughter asked me to take a string off her acoustic guitar so she had a 5 string like most of my basses have been. I don’t push my girls to take lessons or anything right now but we do plan to have them in band or orchestra at school when they are old enough. I started on trumpet at age 9 my wife started violin around 8 years old. I just let my girls have fun with it right now. I think if they can see that music is fun and not a chore they’ll be more inspired to practice when they are old enough to play at school. I have the guitar which is just a Carlo Robelli (can’t remember how it’s spelled) short scale tuned to an open chord so they can play one finger chords and sing. Both my girls are in dance. Youngest does tap and oldest is in ballet. Both are in gymnastics as well. Both of them are very smart the youngest is typically the more athletic but the oldest is pretty good at soccer now.
