Doctor's appointment at 4...can't practice at 6!

Bandmate has a doctor's appointment at 4 p.m. but can't practice at 6 p.m. Does that seem right? It's a simple appointment, not anything very serious. I don't want to say what it is but it isn't invasive or anything that he would have to be anesthestized for or anything like that. A simple appointment.

Ever heard of Empathy?

Yeah, a lot of doctor's are notorious for running late. Guy was probably doing you a favour knowing he likely wouldn't be getting out of there in time to make practice. Better that than him phoning you 30 minutes late saying "yeahh, I'm still stick waiting for the doctor".

Or he's sneaking around like a scoundrel and is playing in another band and doesn't know how to tell you. lol.

Just because he told you a purpose for a doctor's appointment doesn't mean he told you the whole purpose. Or all the circumstances.

For example, he could be going in to have a hemorrhoid banded. I can tell you that after that, band practices aren't on the agenda. Or maybe he gets so nervous that he's going to be full of tranquilizers and his wife's going to have to take him home and pour him out of the car.

Honestly, if you're over 70 and still getting torqued up over this stuff, and your name isn't Buddy Rich or Tommy Dorsey, and you're not playing for 6 figures, I think you ought to re-evaluate just how tightly you want to be wound about this part time hobby weekend warrior band.

Let me play Devil's Advocate for a second. 4PM appointment, cool. If he's not taken 'til 4:15 or 4:30, you don't know how long the appointment is. I've had ones that are 3 minutes and others that are much longer. Then he has to leave, get to rehearsal, etc. 6PM *could* potentially work but it may not.

I do agree he could say "hey, could we start at 6:30 to play it safe" or "can we move it to 7?". Something like that.

I'm not walking in either of your shoes here. I get he has had issues but it sounds like collectively everyone may not be as pumped as you are about the project, too.

For perspective. I live in Los Angeles and here it is quite possible for that 2 hour window to be a significant factor.

Say I have a doctor on the west side of town and band practice on the east side and I live/work in the middle. I’m not loading gear in my car before rehearsal, so that means I gotta stop by the house if that’s where the gear is.
Let’s say
4pm scheduled doc appointment.
Doc runs late, and I’m now at 4:15-4:30 start. Appointment takes about 30-45 minutes.
5pm leaving the doc. Now I’m in rush hour traffic. It’s easily going to be 30-45 minutes to get home. Another chunk of time to load the gear. Another 30-45 minutes to drive to the rehearsal space, still in rush hour traffic.
6:30 would be the arrival time at the rehearsal space, plus the time to set things up.

In this case I’d ask for a later rehearsal or call it a cancelation. I know this is a L.A. traffic problem that doesn’t apply to other parts of the world, but it shows how things could be.

EDIT - @Ronky mentions food a few posts after this one. Absolutely. The timeline above has no time for a meal, which could mean not eating since maybe 3pm before the 4pm appointment and waiting until after rehearsal or grabbing food and eating at some point (possibly a sandwich while driving).

This is a clear case of stealing time from the band. You should haul him down to the HR Department, and throw the book at him. He isn't paid a salary + benefits to sit at home malingering.
