I had a Tony Franklin Fretless. Great bass overall, but the J pickup introduced some single coil hum (some when both pickups were on, a lot when soloed). I think I would have liked it better if the J was hum cancelling. Still, there was good overall balance between the pickups, which is also a tricky thing to achieve. I guess I'd be fine with a P/J as long as both pickups are pretty even in output and don't hum, but these are elusive.
I love PJ basses with a jazz body. Like this

I just can't get past the fish hook looking pick guard of the P body. Also any PJ has to have the pearloid block inlays on the fretboard.
Same here, keep it simple. Got an 80's Japan Yamaha BB450 for $75, butchered and painted pink. Stripped the pink, and original black paint and scrapped the pots. Wired both P/U's straight to the jack and, "VOILA", I like it. Have since added a single volume pot and still like it.I’m starting to learn that I generally like basses with relatively simple controls and classic pickup settings. (ie: my Fender Jazz and Fender Precision).
I owned a PJ bass for awhile, but I was always just setting it to the isolated P pup, and using it as just a secondary P Bass. It sounded way to harsh with both pickups on.
I wouldn't ever own a one-pickup bass. I have one bass with a split P style pickup but it also has a J bridge pickup. My favorite sound on that bass is P at 100% volume, J rolled off just enough to change the sound. But if the J is rolled all the way off, the sound is less sharp and well-rounded.I’m starting to learn that I generally like basses with relatively simple controls and classic pickup settings.
