Does anyone have "the one", yet you keep searching?

I currently play two of the best basses I've heard. I'm not searching for my next bass but I do keep up with developments in the bass world. If I come across a better bass, that I can afford, I'd probably buy it. Why not? It is better after all.

After MANY years of searching and swapping, I’m glad to be done with any serious searching as well. A lol now and again, a visit to a shop to “noodle” but that’s about it.

My new to me 2007 EBMM Sterling HS seems to be my "one" but I still find myself looking on the classifieds.
And the red Fender Power Jazz Special was my number one for 30 years.

I have “The One” Fretless, but I keep searching for its Fretted Partner. I am pretty damn happy with two current Fretted Basses.... Are either of them “The One”? No.

Let me qualify "the one" by defining it as a bass that meets your needs and preferences so well, that finding another that fits you as well is very statistically improbable.

So who has this instrument.....loves it to pieces....yet still snoops around for something new?

If you're a "need a bag of golf clubs" person, i.e. different tools for different situations, clearly this won't apply to you. But if you're a hobbyist that is really happiest playing said "one", I'd be interested to know whether you still search.

EDIT: If you have a "one", then please tell us what it is!

I have the only bass I’ll ever need. I still window shop just for fun though

I have "The One" right now. It's an Overwater Phil Mann Signature Custom J-Style 5-string that I commissioned last year. It's literally the perfect bass for me. So what did I do? I went and bought a Fodera 4 string. I've got to admit, it's nice too. ‍

Yup. The Reverend Mercalli V in my profile pic. It's been my only gigging bass for almost 5 years now and literally covers everything I need for the gigs I play. I've bought and sold a few other basses, and I constantly tell myself to just buy another one as a backup...but that's not as much fun as window shopping others

That's almost definitely going to be the next bass that I get. Can you elaborate on what you like about it? I've never gotten to play one yet, but every demo I've seen makes it sound so good.

After buying and selling numerous boutique level basses to find "the one," I've narrowed it down to the three basses that I currently own. A Le Fay Singer 5 string, and two multiscales, a Dingwall 5 string and a Dingwall 6 string. So I'm not looking to buy another bass. If anything, I'm looking to reduce my inventory down to a single 5 string and my 6 string.

My "the one" is the Pedulla TBass 5. It has been my only fretted BG since my son was 2, so... 14 years. The thick, heavy sound of the Barts is an audio delicacy....

(ahem) so, why did I buy the Lakland Darryl Jones 5 from Dr. Cheese? Because - even though the Pedulla has a sound and feel that I would not trade for anything, there is something I've always liked about the passive jay bass sound.... it has a contrast from the TBass… a sound I have enjoyed hearing for soooo many years, and I'm going to give it a go!!!

"The one" is only the one for a while, then times, taste, tones, etc. change and the one becomes something different for most folks. Another thing, amps, speakers, etc change and start making the owner drift toward another "one".

Another thing; music and popular tone changes, new stuff comes along, and a different sound enters the ear of the player, so it requires a different "one" to achieve the new sound.

Lastly, and perhaps more than anything else, the player progresses in ability & knowledge of how to play, and how to set up an instrument or how to have it set up, which also has a player looking at other "ones" to help them achieve another level.

All this to say I have my "one" and about another dozen since finding it....

Yep, my Custom Roscoe LG3005 is the perfect bass in every way for me, yet I still troll the classifieds in case something else peeks my interest, its fun.

I’m fortunate enough to have many basses that are perfect for me. I do have a “#1” but #’s 2,3,4, etc. are just about as good.

I’ve come to the conclusion recently that there is no “One” bass for me. I have favorites, but there may always be something new (to me) and super interesting that could supersede it depending on what sorts of sounds have my interest at the time.

I've been with my current "one" for 27 years. I was with my prior "one" for 22. Am I a bad person for frequently spending a deeply meaningful short-term relationship with "next" a regular basis?

There will always be the, yeah, that's the "one". And then there will always be no wait, this one is it. And then, this one comes up just once in a lifetime, I promise, it will be the last...
And then we'll be saying...."I'm sure going to miss her".
