Does anyone have "the one", yet you keep searching?

I have many examples of "the One" in my collection and they get used depending on the gig or the rehearsal. I used to say "there's always room for one more" but those days seem to be over until I can swing an addition to the house. So I guess I am in the "one in - one out" stage of collecting at the moment; at least until the next must-have unit appears.

Thump on,

That's almost definitely going to be the next bass that I get. Can you elaborate on what you like about it? I've never gotten to play one yet, but every demo I've seen makes it sound so good.

1) - TONE. I've posted quite a few times how I think Reverend just "got it" with the pickups and passive control scheme on this instrument. It does the thumpy p-bass sound on the reverse-p front pickup. It does aggressive/biting "musicman-esque" on the back pickup. The combination/middle area of the blend knob has a very pleasant "do-it-all" quality. I came from a Fender American Standard Jazz 5-string, and I've never missed it. Obviously just my opinion, but the only tone I really like from my jazz was both pups full on, and then I could coax some sounds out based on where my right hand was plucking. It was fine, really. What I've found with the Mercalli is that I get a TON of different sounds by having two very different pickups that compliment each other very nicely.

2) much simpler...the build quality is every bit as good as any other bass I've owned.

3) it looks sweet :)

My "actual one" is a G&L tribute L2000, maple fretboard/neck, ash body. THE one would be the same bass USA made(maybe an ASAT too), but where i live, it's cost prohibited...My country echonomics are upside down.
What i'd like to have also is a L2500 to complement.
Tonewhise, i've found my sweet spot.

They keep showing up “one”@ a time....
Right now #1 is the 4004L, and will likely be for awhile.....unlike any bass I’ve owned in the last 20 years. And yes, I’m still searching, and I have no idea why!

I have my “one” - an ‘89 L-2000 that I’ve had since ‘94. (It was new when I got it, though.). I’ve had maybe 15 different basses since getting the L2k and currently have 7 others, but the L2k is in it for the long haul. Everything else I have now, I’ve had for 5 years or less.

I've determined that 1-One isn't going to cut it for me. Pretty sure I have the One P-bass in my '62 slab-board and will probably let the '58 go. I've gone through a ton of Ricks looking for the One Rick, only to find out I had it early on and let it go because I was convinced it had to be an old one. If I can find the right 4001V63, that will do for a Rick. Then it's just a matter of finding the right Alembic Distillate. Then I'm done, I promise!;)

I don't think in terms of a single bass as "the one," but I've landed on "the one (or two)" for key categories of basses, and I don't keep searching at all in those categories.

For example, I love J-basses, and I'm completely satisfied with my 2003 MIA Fender and 2010 G&L USA JB. No GAS for another J4. I can't declare either of these as "the one" J-bass, because I love and use both. For gigs, however, I do prefer the G&L.

In the active five category, I'm done. My 2013 G&L USA M-2500 is fantastic.

For P-basses, probably done. My "P" is a 2007 G&L USA SB-2 I've had for 12 years, which kicked several basses out of the herd including an excellent 2004 Fender P with a Fralin. But it doesn't feel quite like "the one" P-bass, because I'd prefer a maple fretboard, and I'd rather not have the bridge pickup. I prefer the minimalism of a straight-up P. But this SB-2 is so excellent that I can't summon the motivation to sell it, and I'd probably have regrets if I did. So, it's probably "the one" for P-basses.

Only category left for me is a passive or active/passive five. My 2008 Fender Jazz V wasn't "the one," but I suspect a G&L JB-5 could be. If I start playing out regularly again, I suspect I'll find out!

Yep, My "one" is a Moonstone Exploder (and a LOWEND T6, a Warick Streamer and Dingwall ABX6) yet for some dumb reason i am always looking. It's like being in a relationship with"the one" but you still can't help appreciating another beautiful form that happens to cross your path..
Me too. I just finally found one and bought it.

I have found my two ‘ones’ 6-7 years ago. 63 flatwound and 69 roundwound P basses. I’m going back and forth which one gets the most use in any given musical phase in my life. I also own some other basses but i seem to continuously keep falling in love with either one. Right now it’s the 69. It just came back from a refret and i feel it only now shows me it’s true colors and what it’s capable of. I am a very grateful bass player.

I can't find a bass I like better than the 1981 Aria Pro II CSB I came across two years ago while I wasn't looking to buy a bass (I thought I already had The One). I'd never even heard of the model, so I went home to do some research, then went back to buy it. Two years later, it's not just The One, it's The Only One.

But I still enjoy looking at and trying other basses, just for fun and to have a sense of the various stuff that's out there; I like basses in general, even if I don't want to own most of them. I suppose if I ever find one I like as much or more than the CSB, perhaps I'll have Another One some day.

Have 2 electric basses and 2 acoustic guitars - each is "the one" and all I need, but for different reasons...

If I go busking in Cali or Amsterdam, my built like a tank 77 Guild F50 acoustic guitar is the one...

Electric blues band, my 68 EB-2 is the one

Distorted bass and singing, my USA P with 50 Love Pedal is the one

Acoustic guitar to play under ideal conditions, it's my Greven 0000 that is the one

Thinking a Mike Lull Super Bird would make a good one for something

Yeah, always looking...
