Double Bass Does electric bass fingering work on double bass? No.

Electric bass fingering does not and will never work on double bass. The current standard of three half steps in the hand is a standard for good and clear reasons.
Since human achievement knows no bounds a few classical players are making 1-2-3-4 work with stretching and pivoting.
Exploring these techniques to expand your ability to play the instrument is a great idea.

Just to clarify, the current standard (1-2-4 fingering) is of 2 half steps in the hand. The alternative 1-2-3-4 fingering method has 3 half steps in the hand.

1-2-3-4 is also taught as the basis of a DB method, from the ground up, and while a teacher is relatively very hard to find, and are mostly classical teachers, those that study this method seem to be doing at least as well as those going through a 1-2-4 system.

Basically agree, but it still only seems to be working in classical settings and the long term physical effects are unknown.

So you basically agree, but completely disagree at the same time? How odd.

So a beginning 9-year-old 1-2-3-4 student is pushing the limits of human achievement each time she/he plays play 'twinkle twinkle'?? How can you believe this?

Hang on. I thought you were of the opinion that these techniques do not and will never work? Or is it that you think they don't work as a method, but do as a technique? Where do you draw the line?

Having never transitioned from EB to a 1-2-3-4 DB method, who are you (or I) to judge that it isn't easier to keep the same patterns? My argument is that being able to keep the same patterns (not technique) in the LH is, theoretically, a positive thing. Why would it not be?? What is your theoretical argument against this?

Absolutely. It is like when kids start Olympic training young. It is an advanced method, and only extremely advanced players teach it.

They work for some people, they are just unrelated to electric bass.

As long as the thread is open here are two things you (Mr. "Vandelay") will not get from me:

* The last post
* A concession

So, keep it coming or find a stoping point and move on.

Dealing with 6-9" difference in scale length and larger fingerboard width make it unlikely for most people to keep the same patterns.

So, in your mind, 'Twinkle twinkle' by a nine year old, who plays a note using her third finger, is pushing the limits of human possibilities, and is equivalent to olympic training?!?! I am genuinely astonished, and find it somewhat hilarious, that you believe that.

I'd hope that only extremely advanced players would teach, period. Maybe you have other ideas?

And finally we get to talk about the elephant in the room. You admit that you are not here to discuss the topic, you are here to have 'the last post' and never 'concede'. Congratulations. A fine example to set for younger players, of how to behave, online, or in life: keep a closed mind, and no matter what anyone says, never concede that your opinions may be wrong, or misinformed. Oh, and make sure you have the last word too!

You may now go ahead and have your 'last post', I won't leave any more comments here, this is clearly not a discussion anymore. I really hope the thread can still go on, and get back on topic, because it's a really interesting topic. That is, discussing if EB fingerings can work on DB or not.

Good luck, Damon.

Anything can work somewhere some of the time.

There are exceptions that, depending on how you like to look at the world, prove or disprove every rule.

Competent professionals teach. There is a lot of headroom between competent and Dalla Torre or Hans Roelofsen - only people at that level are teaching 1-2-3-4 with any success. So, yes: a nine year old student of theirs playing anything would be similar to a kid starting Olympic training.

To clarify, that only pertains to you. Regardless of what you say, my reading is that you are here to have a pi**ing match and split hairs.
I was dumb enough to enter into it and I am here to the end.

You are also presenting far-fetched and unrealistic ideas that would create false hopes and cloud the issue.

I reckon this is the best fruitcake thread on TB. 124 worked for me for 30 yeas and while Arts input was interesting for a while, it means nothing to me, its a urinating contest all can see.
