It's their life, their choice. Same can be said about musicians doing heroin, meth, coke, cases of beer or gallons of whisky, etc.How could anyone who makes their living with their voice smoke cigarettes in this day and age?
Wow.It's their life, their choice. Same can be said about musicians doing heroin, meth, coke, cases of beer or gallons of whisky, etc.
Nate King Cole had one of the smoothest, enjoyable voices ever. It's claimed the round, tall Capital records building in Hollywood CA was the house that Nate built. He had gold albums with every release. It also helped that Capital was the American distributor for the Beatles records and Frank Sinatra recorded there too.
Back to Nate. He smoked 4 packs of cigarettes a day. His doctor and family begged him to quit or at least slow down with the smoking.
He did not. He said he was afraid if he stopped smoking it would change his vocal timbre and or he'd lose his signature sound.
At the age of 45 they discovered a malignant tumor on his lung after he started losing weight and had severe back pain.
He collapsed after a show at the Sands in Las Vegas. The doctors gave a him only a few months to live. He spent those last days in the studio and recorded his last album L-O-V-E. His daughter noted later that he did this to assure the welfare of his family. It was considered one of his finest albums.
So before I start questioning or stating my opinion about what other musicians are doing, I need to first keep my own side of the street clean.

I'm going to guess it was easier back when smoking pretty much anywhere indoors was allowed.I find the hardest part to believe is how does anyone have time to smoke 4 packs of cigarettes a day? That's a major time commitment.

My mom smoked, lots of extended family that smoked, I use to smoke, hard as hell to get over. But I can tell even with the limited voice I have it's much better and easier without them.
Mao Ze Dong supposedly slept for only a few hours a night. Fueled by up to a carton of cigarettes per day.4 packs a day/20 per pack is 80 cigarettes. It can be done. I takes about 7 minutes to smoke a cigarette. If you light up a fresh cigarette with the one you're putting out, or put another way, you always have a cigarette going, that's 9 & 1/3rd hours of nonstop smoking. So you have time to smoke, take a break to eat and still get 8 hours of sleep. As a kid I recall seeing more than one person having a cigarette burning in the table ashtray while they were eating at the diner. Of course, that was back in days when all doctors offices had ashtrays in their waiting room and 57% of all adults smoked. My doctor as a youth smoked while I was getting my physical for summer camp. He spent at least 5 minutes preaching to me about the dangers of smoking marijuana and how bad it was for me, as he was lighting up his 2nd cigarette. I passed my physical, paid him his $5 and never thought about it again.

I was working up around Knoxville for a while in a big classic country band and I can't tell you how many girls I saw with a Skoal ring in their hip pocket. Daisy Dukes with cowboy boots and a Skoal ring, it just don't get no better'en that.I'd like to believe that she's now into chewing tobacco. She just can't go without a half can of chew shoved in her mouth at all times.![]()
Let's see...My grandmother on my mom’s side. Lived 1893-2006 . She dipped usually Bruton Snuff until around age 65 when she had her teeth pulled. Never got used to her dentures . Began smoking either Kent or Taryton cigs until the last years of her life. Passed 4 months short of her 93rd birthday.
Let's see...
2006-1893 = 93? Sounds like methematics to me![]()

Ever since I lost one of my lungs, I cut my smoking in half.
