Does this bass exist?

Perhaps I've been searching the wrong key words, but I can't seem to find a bass that is relatively cheap, lets say $300-$500 USD, with:

5 stringer
34" scale
MMJ or just MM style pups
Frequent gig/long term durability
Reliable electronics/tuners/bridge/neck etc.
preferably a "rock" look
Passive or active/easy to mod

Think a la lakland 55-02's w/ the MMJ's, but 34" and much more affordable. I already have a bass (Roscoe SKB3005) with the dual soapbar config (w/ bart electronics and pups) which I love and suits that role perfectly, but I'm kind of looking for a hard rock/alternative music type bass to compliment it, that I also really wouldn't mind roughing up a little bit, or tossing a decal on, etc.

The problem is I need it to be very reliable and not have a tone that sounds like utter a**. I dont need fancy aesthetics, inlays or any of that stuff, just a workhorse that offers me tonal options that my Roscoe isn't as well suited for.

Have you checked out the OLP Stingrays? I've found OLP instruments to be quite well made.

Yeah, you're right and I'm considering those, I was just trying to expand my range of options (if it's possible). I don't think OLP makes and MMJ either, if so I haven't seen one.

That Tony Levin OLP is very tempting indeed; I thought it only came in that hideous peach (not that it really matters, but hey) but I see that it has a natural finish too. Hmmm! Thanks for the Dean and Ronso links guys. Pretty much just the stuff I was looking for

Sounds like you're looking for an RD900 - MM at the bridge, Jazz at the neck, 2 band active EQ or passive, vol + mix controls. I've got an RD600 from a couple of years back - gig it all the time. Not expensive but plays really well and I don't have to worry about leaving it around in the breaks. They did these as a 4 and a 5 as the RD600 and RD605 (I think) - not sure if there's a 5 RD900.

OK checked that out - there's an RD505 in the USA - but here in Europe we can get the RD905 - try www.thomann.de for a supplier - they speak English although it's in Germany.

Sounds like you'd like a Dillion VMB500/5. It's exactly as you've described. There's one listed on Ebay.

You might like the TBC Single M 5 stringer if you want the 34" scale. I have one of the four string versions, and I like it a lot. If you want a TBC MM-J setup, then you'll have to get a 35" scale. I don't know if you can still get anything from them directly, but you can probably find one used if you look around.
