Double Bass Don't look at me

This is probably unnecessary, but I'd like to give Chris, Francois and Paul a big thumbs-up for their efforts here in creating and maintaining our low-end community.

I have experienced both the slime-pits of unregulated bulletin boards and the shackles of over-policed ones, and really appreciate the wisdom they bring to their moderation here.

Thanks, guys, for spending your valuable time making this a civilized place we can hang out in and poke fun at each other :p .

Andy

His final post was in reponse to a couple of posts that were kidding with him and trying to get him to restore his sense of humor. The posts had smilies to empasize that. He seemed to take them seriously. Don't know if that's what broke the camel's back so to speak.

That's a shame. All forms of communication have their weaknesses, but it's sad to hear that this may be even in small part due to the limitations of online exchanges.

Misunderstandings suck. I don't mind being blamed for what I may have said, but it's always terrible to be scorned for something you didn't intend. Sad to hear that's what it was.

I normally try not to get involved with personality clash/crash type threads, but I have lurked through many of more heated debates. IMHO many of the disagreements where, to me at least, clearly ego driven. Seeing the IRONY in one's own posts is not easy for people who are always right. I would tend to agree with mchilidog, even if you are the most knowledgeable person on the block, there is no need to be a bully. I don't always agree with fedugua's points, but to me his approach, while sometimes intense, is articulate and clever without being IRONIC in that sense (unless he's trying to be). He may be blunt but he's not a bully.
The moderators on this board seem to operate with actual moderation (pun intended) but some people are just more paranoid than others. My $.02.

So Ken really took his ball and went home then?? Too bad, honestly. He had SO much information to share although I can certainly see how he rubbed some people the wrong way. I enjoyed hearing about and seeing pics of basses I'll likely never be able to afford. What I'd really like would be to HEAR those zillion dollar basses. Did he ever post any recordings of them?

I'll second Andy's thanks. Y'all (Texan for youse guys) are doing a great and often thankless job (except for these posts :D). There are a lot of strong personalities and ego to go along with much of the information that folks care to share and it's not always clear where to draw the line. But, civility and respect need to underpin all of these discussions. - Ron

Sorry to burst your bubble, Jake, but people like Ken Smith are not who prop up the bass world...it's your average bread-n-butter working bassist. Guys who deserve every bit of the respect that you assign to your vaunted teacher-collector-builder-yadayada. Who in the world do you think puts those idols of yours onto that altar? It's the people who buy the product!

In the end, nobody...and I mean NOBODY deserves respect if they refuse to give it. And how in the world would you know...at a mere 26 yrs of age...who "knows what they're talking about"? Lots of us have been gigging longer than you've been alive!
I may be 26, but I do know that Ken was playing in Horace Silver's band WAY back in the day and that Bill Evans let him sit in on more than one occasion. He was making a living in NYC on electric and acoustic bass when he started making electric basses. I'll also mention that KSB has been in the high end double bass game for a LONG time and has probably forgoten more about nice instruments than most people will ever learn and the fine luthiers on TBDB all seem to give him their respect. I do not kiss anyone's butt, however, I do appreciate greatness and it was cool learning from what Ken posted here.

I think it's a shame that we lose any contributors to the forum - but I do tend to think there is a definite trend to try to stand up to anybody who has any kind of "name" in the business - sort of like - I may be a non-entity but I'm not going to take any crap from you ! :hmm:

I respect people who use their real name and stand by their achievements - I'm afraid I can't respect people who hide behind aliases and throw insults! :rollno:

Thanks for noticing, not everyone does.

Ray IS currently out on tour but he has, by his own choice, decided to limit his involvement with this site. He's fine, back in Brooklyn and seems pretty content with his decisions.

Damon Rondeau was the guy who came out of left field in my 'Thoughtful Policing' thread that went out of his way to insult me and my profession. Chris would not MOD his off-topic insults. So the results are I leave TB and Damon Rondeau get rewarded and promoted to Mod status..

What a fucxxxg dog and pony show you guys have turned this into.

oK.. Let's see if you have the balls to let this stay up and allow all the TBers to read my response..

Paul JUST deleted this (2x now) BUT this thread is about me leaving and this was one of the main reasons. Go ahead and shut me up.. Ban me.. I have a job and a life.. TB was fun but not a 'mat' for anyone.. Sry guys.. Bad call made here and it wasn't by me..

Speak of Thought Police.. Give out some more badges to the offenders why don't you!

Seems to me this can all be worked out! Ken, I think you should stay. Your dispute is not with the vast majority, only a few. Its clear a number of people value your input and want to learn from you in the future. Please, think it over.

This is kind of sad, really. Ken did add a lot of value to TBDB. No doubt, he could be coarse on occasion, but we all have our faults. He was even kind enough to offer me some additional insight via PM a couple of times. He will be missed.

I never really minded the attitude. I guess I always figured he had the resume to warrant the swagger.

That said, I can't help but have a standing "don't let the door hit you in the . . . " attitude about anyone who gets too bent out of shape on an internet forum. There's too much more to life.

Whoo, big changes.

Winnebago Boy gets a title, as does Handy Andy, and The String Nazi narrows his focus. Should be good.

Ken-doll takes his toys and goes home. Too bad, but inevitable really, for someone so heavy-handed with such a thin skin himself.

Way to step up to the plate new moderators; the old moderators have set the bar very high indeed.

Thank you all for helping make this forum such an invaluable resource.

Nicely summarized Captain Fantastic.
