Double Bass Don't look at me

Anyone who was offended by Ken Smith's posts needs to grows a set of balls.
Seriously, are you guys kidding me? Ken's been in the buisness over 30+ years and his opinion, to me at least, means something of value, whether I agree with it or not. I've only been on TB about a year, and have had interaction with KS a bunch of times, and I never felt intimidated, offended, put off, or felt like crying to a good Meryl Streep movie while I drank warm tea and painted my toenails.
Whatever. Much better to get advice from a guy that has been playing for 6 months, owns a Chinese bass, and asks "how do you make a walking bassline?"

BTW, no I don't own a Smith bass and don't plan to either.

Please ignore any of my advice, I own a Chinese Bass. Oh wait.....I've been playing longer than 6 months and I know how to walk.......

as you were....

I respect people who use their real name and stand by their achievements - I'm afraid I can't respect people who hide behind aliases and throw insults! :rollno:

OTOH my friend, I'm afraid that familiarity can breed contempt, if you look at what is happening here. Sometimes standing by your achievements can be more about being stubborn and "right" and fear of being "wrong". IMHO

Really? I think I have a pretty strong set as do many others here. At times, there was much by which to be justifiably offended and some of those unwarranted posts just spoiled an enjoyable exercise. In other words, I strongly disagree.

...We may all aspire to drive a restored 'vette someday, or maybe even a classic Rolls. But most of us get to work to earn our daily bread in something far more pedestrian.

I really appreciated your thoughtful post and I got a kick out of the seemingly unintended pun above. :) (hint: pedestrian)

When I have conversations on the phone or in person with the folks I have interacted with on TBDB I'm struck by how interesting, diverse and engaging those conversations are. ALL of the regular contributors I have had discussions with are people I have learned much from and found to be interesting personalities. I am touched by peoples artistry and dedication---even when they are just bitching.

These recent clashes of perspective, ego, and misunderstanding have led to lots of innuendo and insult flying about in all directions that I think are in part deserved and in part undeserved.

I've been joking and playing around this stuff hoping it will go away but it's not.

At this point I'm asking everyone to chill, to stop the bashing and insults and innuendo. There is a little bit of good in everyone and little bit of bad. Like every single relationship in our lives we must accept the bad with the good, learn to enjoy the excellent and forgive the shortcomings.

I'd like to see more live and let live at this point and get back to discussing the stuff that brought us here in the first place.

You may notice a new thread in the strings forum. I sort of hold you responsible BTW ;)

At last! A Voice of Reason.....I'm hoping we can all leave our egos at the door when we enter

This is something I've never understood
Moderators don't make a community (altho they do keep a site cleaner and spam free) the users make a community. The moderation on this site isn't very restrictive. I may not have a high post count but over the past few months that I've been a member I've read a LOT of posts on both the DB and BG sections of the site.

Maybe he'll realize that overall this site has been a very positive experience for him. I've seen almost nothing but positive statements about Ken Smith and that HAS to be good for business.

Just my opinion about the situation as a reader but not much of a poster.

A couple of things we all have to keep in mind. A post to a forum can be completely non-threatening, until it is read by another reader.

We're in constant discussion here on talkbass, but it's just not the same as conversation between 2-3-4 individuals. The differences in voice inflection, the expression of faces and hands all play a part in what we're trying to covey to each other.

By the same token, some folks feel the bravado to be very blunt and sometimes, disrespectful, to those on the receiving end of these email discussions.

Sometimes, we just need to take a breath, let things simmer for a bit and then the soup may be a bit tastier to those participating. More pleasing to all those involved.

I'm glad for the knowledge shared here, but I hope to be respectful to those I converse with. If something I say is interpreted in a manner different from my intention, I'll be the one to try and clear up what I was trying to share.

Well said. It is true that much is and can be lost without the auditory and visual cues that accompany personal discourse. Unfortunately, in many cases, it was a poster's intention to mock, insult, and belittle. For me, that just ruined the good time we all generally have here sharing our views.
