I was going to just get a piece big enough for one guitar neck, but I ended up with an 8' board, so I'll probably use some of it for body/top wood too.
I have a couple figured cherry boards that I have yet to use. Gorgeous stuff, and cheap! I need to plan a cherry/walnut or cherry/maple build.
I think I may. First, I need to design and build an 8-string octave for a friend, as well as a short scale 1959 Gibson Eb-0-ish type bass. Actually, the cherry and walnut may work there since he prefers sustainable lumber. That would be kind of fun to have that SG-style body in beautiful walnut/cherry tones and an oil finish. Hmmmm, I'll indeed look into that.
I put a coat of tung oil on this. I definitely want it to have a longer fade transition on the guitar.
I'll see how the tung oil holds up on there after a while. I'm pretty sure it's not real oil though anyway.
I made my Sugru corners, I think they turned out pretty good.
Sugru is an adhesive and it can hold wood together or to other objects, so I put wax paper on each side to make sure I can remove it.
They turned out like this after they dried.
So, I have 2 corner holders that hold up the two high corners enough to where the two low corners rest on the table/board/whatever and the high corners can't wobble.
I'm going to double-stick-tape them down to the base of the router sled and probably put a little tape inside to hold the tamarind to the corners too.
And they're re-usable since they aren't stuck to anything, so they might come in handy when it comes time to level the first side of the neck laminates too.
I'm going to shop for walnut next weekend. A local lumber place is having a "Lumber Rodeo" where lumber packs are 10-50% off and they have other things going on. I'm not sure what a "pack" consists of, but I'm hoping to just get 2-3 boards for now. Their normal prices are already less than what I have found other places. What do you guys usually pay for walnut?

How did that Sugru work out as shims? I've almost completed my router sled and am trying to come up with good ways to keep a work piece level for the first face surfacing.
1C stands for number 1 common, then there's Cabinet grade, and Superior grade. The main store is in the Portland area and the website is hardwoodind.com

Is that Claro walnut? I'm buying Eastern. Not sure what the price difference average is between the two. Someone in CA told me they spend about 2-3x as much over there.

No, that's not Claro-although a couple pieces I snagged sure look like Claro.....and yeah, main store is in Sherwood, but I work in the Medford store.

I have been watching Safe-T-Planer videos on youtube and trying to get myself excited to do some wood thicknessing/planing (as excited as I can get for that) and I am determined to make sure to work on the guitars this weekend! Hoping not to jinx myself, because the last 3-4 weekends, something has come up every day that I thought I'd be able to work on them... So, assuming I do get a chance to work on them, the twisted spalted tamarind is one of the first things I plan to work on, so I will update on how the Sugru works out for that. My main concern is that the Sugru is flexible, but I think it should work anyway for light router passes. I doubt that the walls will bend down or anything.
I'm also planning on cutting/leveling a bunch of clamping cauls, because I should have done that from the first build... making a table (mdf most likely) for the drill press for infeed/outfeed surface when I use the Safe-T-Planer, get all the limba ready to glue and joint all the top woods after I get the tamarind re-sawn and leveled. I'm hoping to fit all of this into one day so I can get some more done on Sunday.
In the meantime, I've come up with even more designs and trying to figure out which ones to do next year.

I know the feeling about never enough time to get all things done you need/want to. There are so many jigs and things I need to be making but with the little time I have to build, I stick with building everything, the hard way. It works for now and maybe some day I will have my dream shop. I think people would be surprised in a good way, if they saw the way/work space I have to build in.

Exactly what I usually do, haha. I'm sure we're not the only ones. I'm always like "gotta get this done, don't have time to build this jig" then it ends up taking me way longer to do everything without the jig than it would have to make it and use it...
