Please be careful with the headphones. Music in the shop is great, but having it isolated like that can prove a dangerous distraction, especially around power tools.

I do love noise canceling headphones; they make my daily commute on public transportation much more bearable. However, I'm not sure they're the best thing for in the shop with spinning, whirling razor sharp blades.

I'm not sure I agree about music or headphones. When I'm using any power tools I wear dual hearing protection, so I can't hear most tools at all. To me you're either paying attention to the tool or not. I personally haven't experienced music distracting me from paying close attention to a tool that can significantly injure me. YMMV, I guess.

They're not 100% noise canceling, I can still hear the tools, they're just not as loud and I can hear the music at the same time. Also, they're wireless, the only "wire" is what connects the 2 pieces behind my head.

I agree. Until now I have been using ear muffs to suppress the sound and these earphones give about the same level of suppression as those did, so there's no difference other than these being more comfortable, less hot, and allowing me to listen to music.

It definitely could be different for different people, but I have a higher level of concentration when I'm listening to music. I used to listen to music when I did homework or studied for tests when I was in school and it always helped me concentrate more. This is kind of similar, except I'm focusing on what I'm doing with the wood/tools instead of studying.

I'm gluing up the wood for both necks as one big neck blank and will re-saw them after they come out of clamps.

Last weekend I did not work on the guitars, because I went to a show in Detroit on Halloween (non-Halloween related, but just happened to be that day), then back home in the middle of the night, then up North for a wedding on Sunday, then spent the day hiking at Sleeping Bear Dunes on Monday before coming home.

Here's a few pictures from Sleeping Bear Dunes. I hadn't been there since I was a kid and just needed to go back and explore.

So I got back to it today and re-sawed the neck blank into two necks and got them leveled off.

That is unfortunately all I got done this weekend, but next weekend I should be able to do the scarf joints, shape headstocks, level the tops, etc.



I also received some pictures from Evan (who I made the 5 string bass for) of Cecil McDaniel (Stevie Wonder) and Joey Porter (The Motet) playing the bass.

Hey Lisa

Thanks so much for the update and the photos of your adventures! In my days growing up in Indiana - we ventured up to the Indiana Dunes State Park on the shores of Lake Michigan - and it was fantastic! It's so beautiful there, especially with the leaves changing. I would love to go back there. Maybe next trip back. Truth be told, many of us could take a more time to "smell the flowers" so to speak.

Very cool on the bass photos too!

The neck blanks look good! Nice color/grain matching on those!

That sounds really nice, you should definitely go back and visit!

I wish I would have had more time to spend exploring the trails up North, but I only had a day off of work, so I had to come back. Maybe next year? It was really nice getting away for a minute.

Thanks! The edges of the neck have all the good looking wenge grain, I'm hoping it will show nicely once they're neck shaped. I was going to flip them the other way for the glue up, but didn't really have enough wood in that direction.

Oh yeah, I also got my first wenge splinter yesterday. It was about 1.5" long and I was wearing medical gloves and pulled at the splinter and thought I got it out, but it still hurt, so I took off my glove and saw that there was still like 1/4" piece left in there, pulled that and it left behind a little tiny dot of wenge under the skin. I had to pick apart my skin to get the little dot out, but it's out.

Here we have about 9 months of summer, a day or two of fall like weather and straight into winter, then a day or two of spring like weather then straight back into summer. The leaves don't change colors, they just fall off of the tree. Of course, our winter is nothing compared to yours.

I would love if it could be fall all year, or like have the opposite of what Hopkins has: long spring, long fall, short summer and winter. Except for allergies... Allergies would suck with the seasons like that.

We're just now starting to get frost over night. I think that usually happens a few weeks earlier in the year. I'm hoping for the weather to be decent until I finish these 2 guitars up! I'll aim at buying a house next year so I can make a basement workshop and not have to worry about the weather anymore.

Today I:
-Cut scarf joints
-Re-sawed headstocks, headstock veneers, and control cavity covers
-Rough tapered the necks and fretboards

I'm done with the re-saw blade! That means I can change blades and be able to cut out the headstocks and bodies soon, but a few other things first.


My spreadsheet on these builds tells me I'm up to 41.25 hours on these builds so far... I wonder how many hours it will be in the end. This is the first time I'm trying to keep track through the whole process. I need to keep in mind that this is 2 guitars and not one, so it's obviously going to make the build process take longer.

I kept track of some of my other builds. They came in at about 80 hours. That was from making the templates to final assembly and setup
