Down the rabbit hole again - Project 4350

I always save the body cutoffs for that exact reason.......and what the hell is Cascsmite? Why TB3 instead TB2? I thought three was softer. Then again, I am not the Gluemaster. I tried Gorilla Glue and that stuff sucks.

Cascamite is a plastic resin glue that is excellent for gluing up laminations, using in vacuum systems, etc. due to its long open/working time. It is waterproof and dries to a nearly crystalline state. I'm not sure if it is a true urea formaldehyde glue or not, but certainly very close. I switched to it after I could no longer find the DAP plastic resin glue. It's been OK for the most part, but not as forgiving as the DAP product was.

As for Gorilla glue... I assume you're talking about their polyurethane glue? That stuff is great in the right situation, but probably not applicable in luthiery. They make a really excellent wood glue that I would highly recommend, though. :thumbsup:

Because I buy TBIII by the gallon for my business so it's what i have to hand and in my experience it sets up hard albeit with a distinct dark glue line. The thing with TB and any aliphatic or PVA is never over-glue and never over clamp. It's not a filler, but it also will easily squeeze out leaving you with a glue starved joint.

Cascamite is a UF (Urea - Formaldehyde) powdered resin glue. It's a very traditional furniture making glue. Mix with water, leave for half an hour, it has good tacky grabby properties when mixed correctly and sets absolutely metal type hard. Downside is a 12 hour cure time before you can machine it, 24 before true cure.

Gorilla PU, the translucent dark brown one, is really a construction grade adhesive. It will penetrate wood and man made boards like you would not believe but it doesn't ever set hard. It's not suitable for our purposes. PU is awesome for building houses and especially for sub flooring. It's what it was designed to do. It retains a little flexibility which is a good thing when you're building a house, which is a deliberately flexible box with a roof.

I think the ultimate glue for musical instrument building is Aerolite 306, which is an acid catalyzed UF. It was developed for the (mostly wooden) De Haviland Mosquito airplane in ww2 as traditional UF delaminated under the tremendous G forces this exceptionally powerful airplane could generate (almost all early Mosquito losses were due to this as they were essentially immune to enemy interception due to being insanely fast), and is still used by home build airplane enthusiasts (aka organ donors) to this day. Downside is, it's very expensive, needs to be stored correctly, and can be extremely unforgiving as it doesn't have a generous open time. You need to be really organized to use it.

Otherwise you have the truly strange exotic/ esoteric wood glues such as UV or RF curing types. That's for NASA, or for Alembic, who think they are NASA.

Once upon a time I worked for de Havilland Canada at the Downsview plant where the Mosquito was built. They had this fantastic photo in the front lobby.

Apparently the Mosquito needed just slightly more runway than they had, and Dufferin Street was in the way. So they installed a traffic light to let the planes cross.
 
Why do you guys cask your mites?
I've never had to cask a mite in my life.
Barrel of Monkeys - huge success (They should try Keg of Monkees for the correct age group, though - could be a beer, could be a pile of plastic junque, either way more royaltie$)

Ants in the Pants - moderate success

Realizing that it's been sort of referred to, but hot hide and or "bone" glues (bone glue being "better known" or "easier to find" as unflavored gelatin [Knox being the typical easy to spot brand in the USA] - cleaner than it "needs to be" for glue, but so much easier to find...) but they need fast work. Can be quite useful for various aspects, though.

I once tried Titebond premixed hide glue in a 4oz bottle. It was about as useful as a fart in a colander. Real hide glue is incredibly strong, but will stink your house out.

English furniture makers used to make a similar glue from cheese and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide, the alkaline salt of calcium metal). I swear I'm not making this up. The cheese of choice was apparently double gloucester. It was kind of a forebear to the UF glues. The milk protein, casein, was the key element, as it's kind of a long chain polymer, but naturally occuring. I believe it was also used widely in ww1 aircraft structures.

As an aside, and to give you an idea of how hard UF glues are when fully cured, you will probably know from bitter experience how good quality marine ply will very quickly kill a brand new tct saw blade or a router cutter. That's not the wood killing the tungsten tips. It's the glue that is holding the wood together that is killing the tips.

And Eddie's personal emblem was a top hat in a ring, which, if you squint, and stand back, looks exactly like the eye of Sauron.

I believe I specified Hardened Cheez Whiz, a notoriously unsound fretwire material.
