Down the rabbit hole again - Project 4350

In all the excitement I forgot to tell you that my new router is being delivered tomorrow. I had to buy it from Germany direct from Hitachi (or Hikoki as they now call themselves) as Metabo HPT (which is what Hitachi now call themselves call themselves in North America and are you confused yet?) had no stock.

It's a 1/2" collet 36 volt brushless motor cordless machine equivalent in power to a 3 1/4HP corded. The only 1/2" cordless currently manufactured in the world. I really can't wait to try it out and to finally not have to keep half an eye on the cord as I rout big stuff like door rebates in a single pass. Hitachi make really nice equipment, they just don't bother with any kind of marketing at all. It's all I've ever used from day one, and all my dad has ever used. It's kind of like of like Ibanez is to bass players - the best kept secret of the daily working professional for the last four decades.

Does your new router have one of those new fangled attachments called a Work Light? For some reason I just assumed my fairly expensive Porter Cable router would have one, since my craptastic Sears Craftsman one did. Pretty disappointed with it all around, no light, no provision for dust collection, stiff and balky height adjustment, hard to reach shaft lock, etc. Meh. I effed up.

Yes, do tell, and share model numbers please. I’m in the market as well. My POS Skil router has a nice work light, but that’s the extent of its positive qualities….

It has "dual high brightness LED illumination".

I won't have it in my hands until tomorrow and shall be posting a thorough appraisal as its first task will be to machine the rebates for a pair of internal matching doors with European oak lipping. A stern test on a difficult timber species prone to chipping and breaking out. I may even try to video that but I'm not sure if I can achieve it safely with a new and unfamiliar tool.

Model number is M3612DA. Once I have the actual machine I will show you anything you want to see on it, but in the meantime here is Hitachi's own beauty shot.

if you have the Hitachi 36v platform, which admittedly few people outside the construction trades will have, it's not unreasonably priced - otherwise that might be a $200 obstacle. I paid $420 including shipping for the tool alone. No charger or battery, but you do get the nice stackable system case, the fence (but I use the universal Makita Vernier scale fence which does fit this machine perfectly) 16mm euro guide bush, and the dust extractor spout. I do use the stackable wheeled system almost daily and so the included case was a bonus because those things are around $60. For many people, then, it's a luxury item. I'll be able to give my objective opinion shortly.

Some threads are … chatty. Full of witty banter, non-sequiturs, tangents, and supplemental anecdotes. This is definitely one of them. Enjoy it for what it is! There are plenty of more boring threads elsewhere that are just as wordy but far less entertaining.

I’m staying plugged in for all of that, but mostly for the end result. And the PDF….

Well I'm sorry if you missed the actual gluey and sawdusty parts but they are there. Believe me, nobody is more frustrated than I am that I can't take vast swathes of time off from my actual job (which also pays the wages of the people who for some bizarre reason choose to work for me) because I'm a single mom and my kids need to eat, and they also need four walls and a roof. My inconsequential hobby isn't going to provide any of those extremely important things. In actual fact it's expensive and if I buy something like a Babicz bridge or a Glockenklang pre-amp, I have to feed the offspring for a few days on the small individual serving foil pouches of cat food that are quite easy to steal from gas stations. I'm lucky that my kids like fish and have no sense of smell.

And anyway we have had everything here, I mean come on, we even had strippers. Nobody else has strippers in their build thread. I'm an innovator.
