Yeah, I learned to solder with a Weller 100 (or was it 300) watt gun - big, crude, pull the trigger and it buzzed mightily since the tip was just a smaller section of metal in the transformer secondary. Tended to burn the tinning off it in short order, needed to be filed a lot.
A 60W WTCPN (magnetic temperature controlled tip - not "adjustable" but you can get tips to swap in 3 temperature ranges) was mind-blowingly better, and I actually still have and use one of those old things. I do have a fancy "dial control" unit as part of my hot air rework station now, but nothing wrong with the older one (and it's smaller.)
Somewhere I have a Porta-Sol butane iron, which is not temperature controlled, but is variable output. Not fond of the annoyance of finding butane on the rare occasion I actually need to solder out of range of an outlet, but a nice enough tool to have when needed. And the exhaust from the catalytic burner was great for your heat shrink tubing (before having a hot air rework...)
