He asked how long ago I ordered and mentioned that I was still in my rescission period to cancel with avatar and place an order with him instead. I picked up on his slyness. I have to talk to this guy I want to place an order for three cabs i'll tell him I want his very best and I'll even pay more because I need them right away for a major overseas gig I can almost hear his chops licking now.

Then ask him to hold while you get your credit card and see how long you can get him to stay on the line before he hangs up.

Well, I played a gig with the 2 way DR Bass cab but it was at a location that has a glass wall behind me and a long narrow format where I struggle with my tone anyway. I have to say that I liked it and the speaker sounded better than it did in the smaller (avatar compact) cab it was in. The tweeter (a faital pro 6 in speaker with crossover network turing it on at 1k) does a great job with out being too harsh. It was a little weird up close though, because the tweet has a bass port on each side so when you lean over to hear it you also get a good dose of the lows. This makes the cab a nice size and I expect it projects well too but it's different up close than the usual port/spkr/tweet config I'm used to. I will be using this cab + the 115 sub at my next gig in Mar. so I should have a much better idea of how they perform in a louder setting.

After a/b tests with my other 4 cabs, I'm not sure if I like the DR Bass cabs yet. Together they both sounded pretty thick, but I was hoping for a warmer sound from them individually. Similar to the 2 Avatar cabs (112CB, 115CB) I have, but not as warm as the 2 Markbass cabs (151HR and 121H) was thinking these would replace. The Markbass 151HR is just a beast and sounds just as big and warmer than the others even used in pairs! Coupling it with any of the other cabs felt like it could level the shed I was testing them in.
I think I will experiment with adding some dampening material to the DR Bass cabs, since there is only a single thin layer on the back wall of each. I was a little surprised when I installed the speakers to see so little material in there but didn't give it much thought at the time. Now I'm wondering if the lack of dampening may be contributing to the odd brightness that I'm sensing from them. Could just be the small wooden shed and the fact that they are fairly compact cabs, though not as small as the Avatars. Still, the larger MB cab continues to impress, in that small space and on gigs, I have mostly used it as a standalone and it always seems to be more than I needed at the time. It does not fit in the trunk were as both Avatars will along with 2 heads and a big backpack. Both Dr 's will not fit in the trunk. This is a concern only when I have to use my car when my gear is in it and have to leave it parked downtown, etc. In that respect, the Avatars are still the most rig I can cary and have an "empty" looking vehicle.

Gave all six cabs a listen again just to be sure. The DR 1615 or what ever it's called is punchy but bass shy until you hit an open E and then it thumps unexpectedly well. Elsewhere on the neck it just seems thin. Also, the crossover knob does nothing at all so apparently I will have to rebuilt the crossover or repair that pad at least. The 115 just sounds middy and that's about it. I will also try different speakers in there, but since Marc was tuning each cab specifically for those exact speakers (port length, crossover point, etc.) I'm surprised that they don't sing with shed filling bass. Hummm. The Avatar with the (4 ohm) 15 was really pretty good and the 12 (neo 8 ohm) was OK but not as big. The Markbass traveler 12 was also OK but it's big brother with the 15 shook the shed on just about every note on the neck. Not nearly as defined or articulate as the others, but I'm sure I can EQ some back in. Guess I'll just use that one from now on, even though it takes 1/2 of the back seat of my Accord and barely fits through the door. On small stages it will always be way too much so that's when the others will get a turn. Conclusion: The 2 DR Bass cabs are very clear and punchy, but not as warm as I'd hoped and kind of nasally sounding to me. I have to say I'm disappointed over all and of course there's all of the purchasing fun that goes with them.

I bought a 3-way 1260 cab from Dr Bass that was no good below E because the ports were too small for the Eminence 3012LF driver being used. I returned it to him along with some extra cash to build me a 15/6 cab with Faital drivers. He put a different 12" driver in the 1260 and sold it but I never saw my 15/6 cab - scoundrel ripped me off...
Go with an honest quality builder like Audiokinesis or any number of good ones who post on this site, NOT Dr Bass.

DRB's Mark did a great job until things imploded on him. He also cared a great deal about the quality of his cabs as he fixed my tweeter the same day he got it and sent it back to me. He also offered an upgrade to a "slanted" cab for only 50 bucks. He's now just building a few cabs and selling them instead of taking custom orders. He probably should have went this route a while ago but hindsight is 20-20.
