DR Strings Club?

Yes, the buzzing goes away if I tough the bridge or tuners. So, basically, nothing to be done other than remove them? :(

I've not dealt with this issue drectly before so i'm not sure of this but you could try and remove a small amount of the coating where the string contacts the bridge. Though i'm not very confident this will work.
Do you get any of the same buzz with normal strings like say when you're not touching the strings with volume up. This could indicate some other ground issue.

No, the bass is dead quiet with normal strings. The Sabre Classic has a hum-canceling circuit built in that seems to work well.

Duh, I don't know why I assumed it was a jazz bass. Then the buzzing would be worse, but I think it's still a problem with coated strings in general.

Yeah, I did some digging and found an article by Roger Sandowsky that basically says just that. It's just frustrating that so many folks seem to have great luck and no issues. It turns into luck of the draw, I guess. Too bad, as I liked what the strings did for the Sabre. It cut down some of the zingy-ness that I had with the stock strings.

Can anyone with experience comment on the extra lite 30 50 70 90 High Beam set? I've in the past loved high beams in the standard medium guage but more recently moved to a lighter guage lower tension string all around. Do you lose any of the tonal characteristics?

Just put my first set of Black Beauties on my 2012 MM Sabre Classic. Ugh...horrible, horrible hum. Bass is pretty much unplayable at the moment. Will see if shielding the electronics cavity works. If not, off they come.

The coating on the strings is not conductive so you are not getting proper ground through the strings. Shielding the cavity unfortunatly will not help. buzzing goes away if you touch the bridge yes?

That's the nature of single coils and coated strings.

Except, it's an active bass with Humbuckers, so not what I expected.

Interesting. I would think that it is something other than the strings / coating that is causing the hum. I have two Sabres ('79 & '80). Both wear Black Beauties. Zero hum. If it goes away when you touch the bridge, wouldn't that be a grounding issue?

Black Beauties are definitely not conductive. But, DR Dragon Skins ARE conductive coated strings.

That being said, I run Black Beauties on my Roscoe and it's hum free!

Where are you getting the information that the Dragon Skins are conductive? I've not seen any information on DR's website, and according to DR, both the Black Beauties and the Dragon Skins use the same K3 coating.

Well I do not have a definite answer for you. There must be some difference between the two strings or they would be sold as the same thing. It is very possible for the same coating to leave one string conductive and the other not. One reason could be the thickness of the coating. If the coating on the dragon skins is significantly thinner it may be much less resistant and allow enough of the signal to pass and complete the ground circut. Another might be that the coating is a slightly different make up from one to the other and still be under the same patent, making it "the same". I would put an Ohm meter to them and check resistance.

Nope, but I really like the 40 60 75 95 set. No difference tonally at all. If anything, the E seems to have more fundamental than the 100 does, particularly for slap. Sounds crazy, but it's true. Wonderful strings.

Currently, I'm using DR High Beams on my AM STD Jazz bass and I really like them. The tension due to the round core is prefect for me and these are some of the longest lasting strings I've ever used. Granted, my Jazz bass is only used at home, but I tried a few different DR nickle sets in the past and they go dead on me very quick. Must be something about my body chemistry that doesn't agree with nickle and not just with DR's either.

Has anyone done a comparison between the High Beams and the Fat Beams? I know the Fat Beams are also a round core, but how do they differ sonically compared to the High Beams? More of "this" or less of "that"? I'm thinking of trying some when my next string change comes around.

Thanks.
