OP: I've learned some things about Japanese listings on eBay. In this case you're looking at a reseller. The bass you want - and I mean exactly that one - is only about 5300$ USD if you buy it directly from the domestic seller, you just have to find a forwarder/purchaser to use.

While Zon makes a great bass, you'd have to be a gambler to place an order for one these days, especially at those prices.

This is the unfortunate truth. Consider my first Zon was bought because I got screwed by a local luthier and got tired of waiting. 20+ years later, still no local bass, I got 2 Zons though. If I start talking about them too much I start to sound like advertisement.

Very cool, Atlansia has some interesting stuff, though nothing new for many years now at this point. I know he's sort of a luthier to the luthiers in Japan, and builds many customized jigs, templates, small machines, etc that support the industry. I particularly like all of his machinework. So many little details. He's inspired me more than once.

Jill of the Japanese band Unlucky Morpheus owns(or has possession of at least) a 100 grand 19th Century Italian violin. But I suspect it's not the one she uses onstage with them. Maybe not her best bow either.


She's done some reviews on YouTube of beginner's violin packages you can buy in Japanese music stores for cheap. She still sounds like an experienced classically trained violinist playing them.

for sure - a good musician will always sound good.

but, just in general, you're not seeing budget instruments in the NY phil, or berlin phil. that's all i really meant. those players are at the end of the day working musicians, gigging their $240,000 instruments nearly every day. crazy.
