Dream instrument, or….?

I've got varying degrees of skill on all the instruments I would want to play (guitar, bass, drums, keys), although my keyboard/piano chops are pretty basic. My left hand can do little except play root notes on every chord change, and any scale that ventures onto the black keys will get me in trouble quickly. Thankfully, I have a transpose button on all my MIDI controllers

So yeah, I wish I was more proficient on keyboards, because I do love playing around with synth tones, and I even play keys live on a couple of our tunes (transposed to all white keys, of course).

Other than that... I guess saxophone could be a fun skill to have as well

I just finished getting in a few minutes with my organ before signing on to TB , I have given up using my left hand.....I'm a righty , just about those chords .

I had a bass clarinet for years. Never got good at it though. I describe the sound as “a woodwind cello.” It’s so full and woody. I really love the sound of it played well!!

For me, it’s the piano.

I used to play the organ and yes, I've played pipe organs, but didn't stick with it long enough so my keyboard chops are pretty much gone.

There’s a huge difference between the two, with an organ you can keep the note going forever while you try to figure out which one to play next

Plus you can find organs that are not only lighter than an SVT, but lighter than a T40.

I know it’s been asked several times before whether anyone plays instruments other than bass and I know a lot of us do. But I want to ask you all here whether there is an instrument that you *wish* you could play but haven’t yet got around to getting started on.

For me, it’s the Organ. And I mean the full thing, the Real McCoy, with three registers, pipes, foot pedals, hand sliders and all. Medieval cathedral-style, complete with the bats in the belfry. I’ve always loved this sound - it literally gives me shivers down my spine when I hear it in real life.

So. How about you? If there’s nothing for you that fits this bill, maybe you can just suggest a good thread title for me?

This was at a museum in Glasgow. The 1300 performance was fantastic. Moves some air, for sure.

The cool thing about a pipe organ is it doesn't need to depend on the PA to support the fundamental. A bunch of big ass pipes, a source of slightly compressed air (used to be manual, now electric), and you're in business. One of the cool things about pipe organs is that you can actually blow hard enough to get a decent amount of sound out of a pipe - it doesn't take as much air as you'd think.

HURDY-GURDY all the way..

I used to have a next door neighbor, a college professor, who played the Hurdy Gurdy as a hobby. Fascinating instrument.

I play guitar (acoustic and electric), mandolin, ukulele, and drums/percussion, and sing--and I'd like to be better at all of these. But in terms of picking up another instrument from scratch it would probably be either harmonica (so I could toss in some solos when playing acoustic guitar) or piano. It's pathetic that I've never learned piano given that my wife is a pianist/keyboardist and so I've been surrounded by keyboards for the last 38 years.

I wish I could play piano. It's such a cool and versatile instrument capable of very different sounds deoending on the player...everything from classic sonatas, or jazz, to someone like Little Richard banging away on the keys!

Also a grand piano is a thing of beauty, inside and out.

I’m already unreasonably proficient on clarinet, sax, trumpet, tuba, cello, all forms of guitar, drum kit, hand percussion, piano, and my favorite instrument- the DAW.

Every day I wish that I had, at some point over a decade ago, spent a decade transcribing every note of OHW’s and hits by Hit Factory writers.

tl;dr I wish I knew pop music better.

When Abraxas came out I was in a basement band. Our keyboardist had a B3 and full sized Leslie amp/cab.

We played a lot of Santana back then. Chicks dug it

I could play keys back then, but not like him. My head still swirls!

Acceptable compromises have been Taurus pedals and a Kurtzweil synth with a decent organ section.

My wife & I just picked up a keyboard last weekend at GC, so hopefully I'll/she'll get started real soon. Can anyone suggest a good online resource for learning piano for a couple of rank beginners? We're hoping it lights a fire under at least one of the kids, too!

I started the piano as an adult and I loved the “piano adventures” series.
My wife, who is quite an advanced pianist (she touches Liszt regularly) had a look at them and found them really well done too.

For me a MK I Fender Rhodes 73 ... but a CRUMAR 7 will fit the bill as well at a much lower cost
