English is the de facto language of the US, but there is no official one. Adopting an official language would presumably require some governmental institute for linguistic standards, like France has for the French language.

Immediately after the revolution it was considered to adopt German for US governmental communications to make a more complete break from England. I think they probably decided the effort wasn't worth the symbolism, especially since it was not assured that the populace would follow suit.

Indeed. Anyone in the states with a license can get an international driver's license from AAA that is good for a year and works in almost any country.

An International Driver's license is just a worthless form of ID. It does not entitle you to drive anywhere you are not licensed to drive.

And I'm just going to say that if you're here, the mainstream societal norm for communication is English. What you do on your own time doesn't matter, but if you're in public you should be able to talk to anyone in English. Especially after 30 years. I would expect the same in any other country that I visted/lived in. Just because the US doesn't have an official language or that because we are founded by immigrants doesn't make today's reality any different.

Common sense. Immigrant, native, emigrant, to communicate in today's society you must speak English. It's not a hard task, it doesn't hurt your culture, it doesn't separate or include you in anything.

By the way, how many people would appreciate threads in other languages? What if someone deserved a ban but didn't speak the mods language?

35 cases in 30 or more years really isn't that bad. It's a federal offense to be a CDL driver and not speak fluent English, so those other offenses were probably guys who made the same mistake, because that happens to be on their list of offenses.

39 cases have been found over the last three years.

Sorry, Ive dealt with non English speaking traffic stops, and they still know when they screwed up. Just because you don't speak English, doesn't mean you can break the law. Was it stupid for him to cite her for not speaking english? Yea, not the best of ideas, but is it important to NOTE THAT THE SUBJECT CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH on the ticket/report.

And for anyone who thinks this is racially motivated. I live and work in an area that is primarily Hispanic. Before I got hurt, I worked in the county jail and for a local police department. I'm currently working toward my degree is correctional counseling and specifically in minority corrections, juv corrections, and community relations.

Sorry I'm a member of a few other boards, and hearing officers get bashed all the time gets old quick.

Im not a cop, but +1 to the cop bashing, it does get old.

Well for the record I never said the officer didn't have probable cause. And officers wouldn't get bashed so much if most of them lived up to what they are suppose to do within the confines of the law.

In my experience, the only people who hate cops, are usually the only ones who have something to hide.

Everyone is an immigrant or has a relative/ancestor who was an immigrant if they live in this country. I prefer that they come over here legally, but that is another topic for another time.

And he did exactly what was within the confines of his power. He messed up on an offence. It happens a lot. If you memorized 1/3 of the penal code, your head would explode.

And most Cops do exactly what they are supposed to. Sorry if you have had an expience which was negitive, but hey theres bad apples everywhere. The thing is, cops get all the front page headlines when they screw up.

What you did was pointed out a case that had a high probability to rise a stir, even though the officer did what he was supposed to.
When you write a ticket/submit a booking offence list, you charge for everything you possibly can, then the court / DA throws out what they feel wont stick, or that it was straight out wrongfull charge. I didnt look to heavily into this article, since im working on a term paper, but I dont belive she was formaly charged with that offence.

I know that some TB members are police officers but the realty is there are more than just a few bad apples wearing blue these days.
