Drop tune - why is it looked down on?

They can, Kwin....but it is very rare in this day and age of "rock star" video games, auto tune and other things that are helping to ruin great music.

And what you and a few other posters on this thread don't get, is that what you are good at is articulating your views on music theory. You get a lot of great talkers and debaters on forums like this. Guys that would be at home on any political talk radio show.

But you are not the norm. The norm can be seen at any guitar center on any given weekend, hacking away at heavy metal chords on drop tuned guitars that are way too f-ing loud. Sorry, but that is the truth and you just don't see it. The average metal artist is most decidedly NOT some techical, musical genius who has gobs of theory under their belts, and just CHOOSES to play drop tuned.

No, the average metal guitarist uses drop tuning because they CANNOT play any other way.

This forum (and other forums) are NOT representative of the average musician at all. There is a whole world out there that never touches these forums. What these forums are good for is arguing and practicing debating. NOT being a great musician. A lot of real smart and educated talkers is what we have here.

Go to guitar center on a sunday and watch and see if it is filled with a bunch of Julliard scholars playing the guitar.

i never said there aren't players who use drop tuning to chug on power chords, in fact i have made that point before. But these aren't the kinds of players i'm talking about.

it seems to me that you just refuse to acknowledge that drop tuning could ever possibly be more useful in certain situations. I'm not talking about some 13 yr old kid who just got his first guitar and thinks he's a rock star.

It seems you missed the point of my post entirely because you got caught up in an, "I must defend metal" rage. Try reading it again after a few deep breaths.

I'm not a fan of mainstream music. I never have been. However, nothing in my post is even remotely concerned with the underground or mainstream nature of music.

As someone whos fairly deeply involved with the underground metal scene in Europe, I can assure you, theres almost as much crap in the underground as there is in the mainstream. Its all about finding the diamonds in the rough.

I still don't understand how any of your reply was even remotely relevant to my post though.
I took some deep breaths, reread it and you are quite right. We actually seem to be on somewhat the same page. It is true that the diamond to poop ratio is the same wether we are talking underground or mainstream, even here in europe.Like you say,its all about finding those diamonds.Bad wording on my part, sorry bout that! Its just ive seen the phrase "average metal bands" so many times in this thread, and you just happened to run past my sights just when i pulled the trigger,my bad.Ill redirect my crosshairs, friendly fire is never a good thing...:D By the way, having been part of the european underground for close to twenty years,i dont reckon i need a schooling on its inner workings...;)

No worries :)

I dislike drop tuning because of the string you then have that has less tension and plays differently.

For me it's annoying.
And also the different patterns you have to learn.`
It takes away from my freedom

This, this and this. Things are so much easier with a nice tight B string.

Quit detuning! Ive got a sweet Gibson Bass V in the classifieds just looking for a new home...

SOmetimes I wish my band would write a song in standard (I practice in standard).

I;ve never really heard anyone complain if even notice alternate tunings, currently my 5'er is tuned ADADG I love it personally very comfortable.

Also helps with all the damn low Ds they make me play all the damn time. Would it kill them to ride say F, G or E even, sorry got away from the topic.

WHo cares if it sounds and feels right do it, if not, don't do it.
More than one way to skin a cat, and all that.
