DRs

i really like the DRs that i tried, but i found that the low B was a bit flabby,

i did only try Sumbeams and the HiBeams on my 5 and i did prefered the Lo Riders on my 4 for overall tone and feel,

what is the low B like on the lo riders and the Fat beams?

i was thinking of trying a set of 40-120 DRs on my Fodera but im not sure what set to go for, i dont really want to get it wrong as i will have to set up my bass because il be changing from D'Addario's pro steels Regular lights

I've been playing for nearly 30 years. Since I first discovered them about 10 years ago, I use DR Lowriders exclusively. My last order I decided to try the Nickel...and my fingers thanked me for it. A couple 4 hour back-to-back gigs and I was completely sold. I only use 40s on my Ibanez, but inadvertantly put 45s on my 5-string. Next string change I'll put 40s back on the 5-string.

bought on sale hi-beam dr ss but totally disliked their sound-not their feel. tried the nickel dr lo-riders i like 'em just fine. the hi-beams were tried out to see about replacing dean markley ss blue steels. i found the high beams too trebley/high, plus the overall sound was like that of bass notes played on a piano. i want my bass to sound like a bass not a piano! definitely find the DM blue steel ss, D'A XL & DR lo-rider nickels superior in sound for a bass. by the way i found all these strings had a soft feel.

:ninja: just another opinion.

Installed Hi-Beams yesterday. I was a bit disappointed. High-quality, bright, balanced set... the best steel strings I've ever tried. They feel like nickel, but don't have that warm tone. The brght precise attack seems to cut in pieces.
Currently I'm waiting for break-in and real action, but I don't feel like staying with these forever - I'll either try Sunbeams or Fender 7150's, or even just stay with GHS bassics.

I guess I'll ask in this thread... I want to get some DR Hot Pink strings for my LeCompte, because I love DR Strings (Hi-Beams) and want that Hi-Beam sound, but I love the visual look of the colored string. Will the pink be good enough in sounding like that Hi-Beam tone, or should I just go against the flair and get that sweet hi-beam sound?

I've used the DR black beauties, Red Devils and the DR peacock blues quite a bit since they came out. I love High beams and Have used them constantly since I found out about them, so I feel what You're saying here. In my opinion I feel that the colored DR strings fall a bit short of the High beam sound and tone. They just don't sound as bright to me, and despite the fact they they claim to have longer life that "normal" strings, I've found that they don't last as long as the High Beams for me. The fell of the string is a bit different too, not 'slimy' like some people have described other coated strings, but different. Good string to string balance though. Another thing I've noticed about them too, is that they coating on the strings may appear to be of a different shade from string to string. I don't really thing its a QC issue of each string being a different color... I actually think it has something to do with the gauge of the string in question (to me, the lighter gauged strings appear to be brighter colored than the heavier gauge).

I still like them though, but for the price, I only buy them if I'm going to play a gig where I wan't everything to look nice and pretty. Only way to know if You like them or not is just to break down and try em out! Hope this helped!

BTW, all the strings I used/use are .45's-.105's.

They "warm-up" nicely after they settle in. Amount of time depends on how often you play.

sorry:scowl:, but if you don't like the sound initially of your strings, don't expect the sound to alter drastically by breaking them in. tho i respect others choice for their own strings, & choices can change depending upon the construction of your bass as to its woods & pickups, i was never able to accept the sound of hi-beams even after several months. i tried them on 2 basses, a pre-gibson sunburst tobias growler w/active bartolini & a warwick w/active mec's. nickel lo-riders are more acceptable to me in dr's line but even they would never be my choice. it's not ss strings that i don't like-it's the dr hi-beams. whatever you do bassists, only buy 1 set of new strings of any kind if you've never had them on your bass before. also, trust your own judgement not reviewers for we can only tell you our view, not yours.
