DRs

Dr's are the best strings i've ever tried. I use MM fat beams. I also like the high beams, they seems more flexible to me.
If you don't like the dr's try Elixer's there pritty cool. they last as long but don't feel or sound as nice as the drs. But still good.

I just bought a set of Fat Beams. How are they compared to Lo Riders and Fender stainless steel strings? Those are the only other SS strings I've ever owned.

I didn't put them on yet because I want a professional setup at the same time.
I just put a set of Fat beams on my Smith, they are just as advertised lov'em I switched from regular HB's.:p

I've been using the MM Fatbeams 45-105s for a few years, and I think there the best for me (good bottom, some grind with reduced highs).
I've been thinking of going to Rodo Jazz Flats for more low definition. The fatbeams are good, but tend to lack differently than flatwounds.
Anybody had the Fatbeams and compaired them to flats?

I gotta post here too.

Simply great strings!
I put some Hi Beams on my old 55-02 and it revitalized the bass.

Then I just got a new Cirrus with new DR Longnecks on it, and they are a great string! Tapercore is the difference with them.

The only other brand I like playing is Ken Smith, but DRs have a certain quality that nearly every other string manufacturer can't duplicate. Wonderful!

Hey folks.

So.. I'm fed up with my Dean Markley Blue Steels because they're too damn bright and feel rough and dry and sticky-esque.

I'm thinking of going to nickels for my Modulus VJ4 fretted and i wanna try out the DRs. I'm not sure which ones to get though. I want a good funky farty tone for slap and fingerstyle funk (anything resembling Les' tone would be good. The strings that best matched his tone I don't know what they are, see thread i made). I use 45-100 guage, and i don't know if i want nickel lo-riders or sunbeams. right, those are my choices? The blue steels have too much of a ZINNGGGG and a clanky metally feel to them for my taste.

I guess where I"m confused is that the DR site says the lo-rider tension is better for slapping, and some people say the flexibility of the sunbeams is better for slapping.

Thoughts?

So I would recommend start with the Hi Beams. They are going to be relatively smooth compared to the Blue Steels.

Low Riders are a bit stiffer. And if stiff is easier for slapping, that's fine, but I didn't know that's what made slapping easy! :smug:

If you ever slap I wouldn't recommend the Sunbeams as they are nickel plated.

The Longnecks are nice, tapered, and you might like 'em.

The rest are just coated versions of the aforementioned.

Another success about DRs

I just put a 6 string set on my Yamaha TRB6P.
I had D'Addario ProSteels on it before.

HUGE improvement in tone.
The bass sings now.
And not just because they are brand new strings.

This is my brand - and type - of string for years to come.

Well, I changed from Hi-Beams/Fat-Beams to Blue Steels for the excact reason you want to change the other way around. The sticky/roughness issue never was any to me, but the DRs might be a bit smoother though. But I thought DRs was way thinner and brighter sounding than Blue Steels.

Just my experience. DRs are good strings, and I would never discourage people to buy them. From what you write Fat-Beams might be best for you. Fatter and deeper sounding than Hi-Beams, though the playabillity of Hi-Beams might suit you. And they can sound pretty full if you find the sweetspot.

Good luck

Fat Beams may just be the best strings I've ever used. With a lot of string sets, the E sounds different enough from the other strings (usually darker), that it bugs me. The E of the FB's is amazing.

Also, I've had these strings on for a couple of months and they're still going strong. Nothing lasts me a couple of months, since I like the new string sound (unless it's a bass with flats).

I've tried Lo-Riders and didn't like them much. Never tried Hi-Beams, maybe I should, but these Fat Beams are really great.

Man some of you guys must be champagne rich! Back when strings wer $10-15 I changed tehm once every other month or so. But these days a good set is $30-45. I tend to go for the DRs because they last longer and maintain a consistent tone. I had used blue steels once. But i kept getting little pieces of metal stuck in my fingers! Pain! Nothing like stopping a practice for that. Maybe I have that "acid sweat".

I am actually experimenting with going to a light guage set when I tune down to D/C# for a more deliberatly flubby sound a la Les Claypool ( I think he does 2 a's and 2 D's?) So I am also going to the Hi beams. Though I may go to MM fat beams after reading this thread.
As far as SS and metalurgy goes, when I used to work in a brewery magnets would not stick to the SS tanks. Just because components of an alloy are magnet friendly does not mean the alloy will be. Brass and bronze both have copper as a constituent element right? And for what its worth, I thought neodymium was an alloy not an element.
