Yeah, Capri Orange. I modeled this after an Elite II I had once. I liked the Pups but not the neck and active electronics. So I made my own. Michael Dolan did the routing and finish work. I have used him for 3 projects and he is so bada$$ good!

Dual pickup P basses?

is that 51 pickup just adding extra output and warmth? seems as if they are so close that a huge tonal difference may not be as evident. rad bass nontheless!

The single coil is the main pickup, and it's about 3/16" closer to the neck than the official stock location. I was going to make it with just the single coil after giving up on split-P pickups, but came upon a split-P/string combination I decided to use.
The split-P is rewound to 12.28K, the single coil is rewound to about 7.5K (will be replaced) and the strings are TI JF344s. I don't really care for the feel of the strings, but the bass sounds so good (to me) I can live with it. The brightest position is both pickups on.

I've been considering a warmoth build myself, and I'm thinking I'll go P/P, with one in the traditional MM spot, and the other in the traditional P spot. Possibly reversed like the Warwick in the original post.

I like the sound of the mirror image set up & this particular bass sounds incredible, with a wealth of tonal options.
i'm not gonna lie....i usually think that mirroring the pickup usually looks goofy but i like the way it looks on this bass! whats up with neck pickup cover? did you try to darkstar it?

I added an extra P p/up to my P a while back. I knew I wanted an additional p/up in the bridge position with a P in the neck and after trying P/MM, P/J & P/P it was the latter that gave me the tone I was looking for, it must be something about matching p/up types as we know J/J works and there is a lot of love currently for MM/MM. Anyway I asked TBers about their thoughts for the 2nd P placement (close together, spaced or reversed) and the overwhelming opinion was spaced. When I went to get the work done the luthier said that he didn't think you'd hear much of a difference between the standard placement or the reverse (his opinion BTW). So if that really is the case then it's just a matter of your own personal asthetic. Anyway here's how mine turned out.
I've gone down the route of adding an additional set of P Bass Pickups to my Fender Precision some years ago. The resulting sound & tone wasn't as good as I imagined it would be and I eventually replaced the Bridge P Bass Pickup with a Jazz Pickup - this is a superb combination! (IMHO).
My advice is to try a P/J configuration Fender Bass first before you start hacking away at the wood!

I also recommend that you try the P/P setup before you take a router to your bass. Lots of folks love the P/P setup, but I like a tighter, more focused sound out of the rear pickup. My advice mirrors Baker69's advice. Try a P/J configuration as well as a P/P before you start routing.

I want to add bridge pickup to my P Bass as well. Originally, I thought I'd put a J pickup there but a dual P pickup bass is interesting.

My Highway One. Bad picture, but it's the only one I have available at this time.
On the pic I have the original pickup in the middle position, a Sadowsky P in the bridge, and a fretless MIM neck.
Right now I have the original neck on, a SD 1/4 Pounder in the middle and the fender pup in the bridge. It's controlled by a 3-way switch (planning on replacing it with a blend pot) and a volume which can't be seen because I haven't bothered to drill holes in the new pickguard yet.
I think this combo rocks! I've never liked the looks of P/J's, but I've always liked the P/P look. With only the middle pup I get a smokin' P-tone from the 1/4 Pounder, and both full on sounds a bit more compressed, with added bite. A good, solid tone that kicks ass for rock'n'roll.
I look forward to installing a blend pot and see how it works to blend the bridge in, and if I can find that perfect balance.
