Dubious failure by Fender Custom Shop!

I've been playing bass for many decades now. When the 70's hit, and Fender made poor quality basses, I swore I wouldn't buy one. Now many decades later, I was almost convinced - they have gotten better quality wise, and CNC has made the necks look like they were actually designed to fit the bodies.

But now, ....A PERIOD INCORRECT DECAL !?!? THE HORROR!!!!

If you don't want to buy a Fender because of this, go right ahead and avoid buying one. You can even state that that's why you aren't buying one. But yeah, this is solidly a first world problem.

It's a "Journeyman relic" - an interpretation of a working bass, not a closet classic or the like, where everything is spot on original - a lot of basses from the 60's have had their necks replaced because of ski jumps and such, so they copied that trend. There are models where everything is "period correct" (probably dozens of them) if that sort of thing is important to you. So....buy one of those.

People sure have a lot of put downs for simply expecting a $5000 Bass to have the Decal correct for the period it is named for.

I get it....I would expect no less.

But have to accept what is

If I ever want to own one.



It is outrageous..considering the cost....If you know the truth ...You cannot unsee it!

The same thing happened to me with Modern Motorcycles having a visible Tank seam...Never noticed until it was pointed out...Now it drives me crazy and spoils the design of beauty in Motorcycles.

The decal is not a mistake, it's what was SPEC'D, by Fender, for this Journeyman bass.
They put it in writing on the build sheet, it's what they decided they wanted cause, you know, they're the builders.
I would criticize them if it was a re-issue, it's not. It's a '68 body & pickup layout with a '75 neck & decal, kinda what a working bassist would've had at the time.

BTW, '68 was in fact a transition year for decal design on Fenders, including Jazz Basses.

Except it’s technically NOT an accurate representation of a typical neck found made in 1975 by Fender.

To my knowledge, black blocks and black binding was used up until 1973. And that decal used really didn’t appear until 1976… I think they refer to the neck as “1975” because they used black blocks, late 70’s decal on the “1975 reissue jazz bass”.

I know this stuff isn’t important to most people — but the decal just ruins for me what would otherwise be an awesome re-creation of a 1968 maple capped Fender Jazz bass.

that's only the red color, which is the default landing page for the bass, but then again why should be be worried about such things? why should we worry about any details? Order a $5000 bass and maybe the color is wrong? who cares...maybe you got maple instead of rosewood, stop whining like a sissy boy and "play the snot out of it."

Actually, I believe Fender knows whether the decal is period correct MUCH better than you.

Just sayin'.

So — I did email the store, and here’s what they had to say regarding the “1968 Relic”:


“Thanks for checking in. It looks like FCS made a mistake. The spec sheet calls for a 66 logo, but that's not what is on the headstock. We should be able to get an updated Floor Traveller that shows the late 70's logo.

Reach out with any questions. “


so the decal was not a custom or special order. The “75” decal was in fact, a mistake by Fender Custom Shop.
