I bought my JBS about the same time as GnR showed up. With those big pole pieces in the pickup (say that 5 times fast) and upping mids on my Amp, and using the TBX at 7, it comes damn Close. Love both of my JBS, fret and fretless

Duff sound

One of my all time favorites and arguably the reason why I had any interest playing bass.
Although I don't play them often, I'll never sell my 800RB, 400RB, and white Fender JBS all from the 80's.
Duff is the reason I play bass. Well, and my brother played guitar better...
GNR is the first band I remember listening to as a kid where the bass was as big a part of the sound as anything else.
But yeah, a GK RB head will be the best way to get close to his tone.

Very much so. The 400RB is a Series II from GC used...$130! The 800RB is a horizontal switch that's also is essentially perfect shape. I think it came from the classifieds here but I don't remember.
I used to have 2001RB. It was an awesome amp! I had an issue where the amp would cut out because something was fried on one of the boards. GK wanted a ton of money to fix it so I just moved on to the 800RB. I still want to pick up either a 700 RB or a 1001 RB-II.
This is a great thread, I've always loved Duff's tone. I am drooling a bit now for a 400RB head. I play covers with a group of friends and it would be fun trying to get Duff's tone. I have an old (1996) Squier Pro-Tone P/J that I think can do the job. It has Duncan Q'pounders and a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz in it. Do the cabs matter as much? Or could I get there with my bass and a 400RB?
To me, most of his tone is the JBS (or Aerodyne) played with a pick going into a GK amp.
I say the JBS or Aerodyne because they both have a Basswood body which I feel contributes to the mid forward tone he gets.
Cabs will certainly come into play but I don't think it's as important.
It's definitely the bass and head, any decent cab will do unless you want to get more accurate.
With Duff, I really don't apply the 'comes from the hands" as much as with others. His sound really is about his gear. Playing style us a whole different deal.
Agreed. IMO, best thing fender ever did. They keep remaking the same old bass, do a reissue of the JBS, as it was.
After watching tons of Duff videos for years, no matter what Bass he plays it sounds like Duff. Whether it be his Jazz special, Aerodyne, white Fender Jazz or his new Fender Pro Series, it sounds like Duff. Play with a pick, Rotosounds and a slow moving chorus for songs like Sweet Child, You Could Be Mine, Rocket Queen, etc. I've also seen a Sansamp BDDI attached to the side of his road case for a direct sound. I've never been a believer that his amp made a huge difference. Same when Geddy was using Orange. His sound was through his Sansamps & Avalon DI's.
That very well may be but I know, using that set up gets that sound, if that's what someone wants.
