Dunlop Strings - one word "Wow"

OK, you want to know what the weirdest thing is?

I have preferred only stainless steel strings for years (because of the brightness), but I think that I actually prefer the Dunlop nickel over the Dunlop stainless steel at this point (but I reserve the right to change that).

It really just blows my mind that I am actually liking a set of nickels better than stainless, it really does.

Les O' Connor, who runs Dunlops string factory...and the guy that designed DR's strings.....says that he wanted the nickels to sound more like stainless, and the stainless more like nickels. Looks like he succeeded :)

Dude, thanks for telling me that; I did not know this at all!!!

It is really amazing for me to like Nickel strings more than SS, it really is because I've been using SS since the early 80's.

At this point I am just completely sold on Dunlop, so unless something changes with their production or God forbid they go out of business I will not even look at another brand of string.

I just wanted to get the word out, especially to ALL the guys who liked DR strings when they first came out.

Many people have been noticing lately that DR strings "Ain't what they used to be", ...............

I still like 'em. Care to elaborate? BTW, I like the nickel Dunlops too.

Yeah, I didn't think so. I don't get why there seems to be an element on here that wants to turn the "big bad DR verses little underdog Dunlop" into some big controversy.

As far as pricing goes, I get DR Sunbeams from Bass Emporium for like 21.97 and Dunlops from Just strings for 16.99 or something around there. It's not like they're TI flats. Heck, 5 bucks is a cup of coffee some places. I like DR's and I like the nickel Dunlops. What's the big deal.

When DR strings first came out, to me they had a slightly different feel and sound than the DR's I purchased a couple months ago.

I don't know exactly what it is (maybe it's just the quality control), but the current DR's are DIFFERENT than the DR's I bought years back.

And I have spoken with many a player here in Florida that have all recently said goodbye to DR, so I am not alone on this.

Ask around and I'll bet you'll find the same thing going on where you live.

I'm not saying all these players are switching to Dunlop, I'm sure most of them don't even know about Dunlop because they are a pretty new brand of strings, but they are leaving DR, and that's just the way it is.

I'm close friends both with Mark Dronge and Jimi Dunlop.
FWIW, I'm a VERY loyal DR string player. ....and very happily so.

Point of clarification- Les O'Connor did NOT design DR strings.

After further review the Dunlop nickel plated steels are my absolute favorite string now. They are even brighter than the Dunlop SS is you can believe that.

IMO

Anyone can say all they want about DR, but if you own all top of the line equipment (including cables) and do a direct comparison with the Dunlop NPS against ANY DR string you will hear (and feel) the difference. If you play fingerstyle rock (as I do) then it is an absolute no brainer as the DR strings cannot compete. I just spent close to $500 in a 1-2 month period on strings alone when doing my comparison.

DR's are OK strings, nothing really wrong with them, but again for fingerstyle rock where you need quality depth of tone, brightness, and great attack with projection (especially in the crucial midrange) the Dunlop NPS are far superior than any other string I've tried.

I'm not close friends with either of them, but I am a loyal Dunlop string and Mesa amp player.

Why, it's very simple - because they both sound better than the other brands.

:D
