Dunwich Amplification General Discussion

Looking to tweak my Volt Thrower for less fizz, and I hear one of the internal trims controls that. Which is it? Thanks.
I remember asking that question a long time ago. I think it was two gain stages, so the answer (I think, is both.)
There is a lot of sizzle to the VT. One thing to try is running it @ 9v if you aren't already. The other is to back off the treble. The EQ is a little weird in that the middle part of the sweep doesn't seem to do much, then suddenly they do a lot.

I use the no diodes setting. It’s been a while, and was last used on my guitar, but if memory serves, the treble was around 11:00 and bass around 3:00. Gain about 2:00. I just always felt that it was always a bit too fizzy in the upper registers. I love the Iron Pig for its attack knob to soften some of the fizz of a Rat, so if I can find a comparable knob on the Volt Thrower, I’d be stoked.
 
My current arrangement for my Mustang PJ rig. I don’t always run the VT. The Zoia at the end is set just as a compressor, after the cab sim, then right to my mixer.

I assume CCW means less fizz? Anybody confirm before I screw something up hard?

It's been a while, but I think that CCW is less fizz. Anyway, you won't screw it up. You will confirm it for yourself as follows:

When you look at the trim pots as they are stock, take a clear, close-up photo of them first, before you adjust them. If ever you want to return them to their stock settings, refer to that photo as your guide.

Then take a moment to look at the pots. In each you will see in its light grey center section the crosshairs you will adjust with your micro screwdriver. Notice how one arm of the cross has curved divets on either side of it. That indicates the "top" of the crosshairs; just like an arrow on a knob connected to a large pot.

Next you will see in the blue body, surrounding most of the center section, a series of dash markers. Recreating the alignment of the grey center section's "top" marker with the blue body's dash markers is part of how you return to any previous setting, whether stock or custom.

The other part involves the fact that the pot is (or might be) a multi-turn type. That means that to set it anywhere from its lowest value to its highest takes a few or several turns, depending on its design. If it is multi-turn, then you should also make a note of how many turns you made in which direction, when you make your custom setting.

The rest you will do by ear. Play an open string as you go. Play with the pots in their stock settings. Then play as you turn the fizz pot in one direction. What difference do you hear? Now you know which direction is more or less fizz. Easy! :D

Just pulled my Volt Thrower out of the drawer for the first time in a while. Opened her up and realized I’d never touched the internal pots. They were both set wide open, letting maximum freqs through. The highs and sizzle sounded perfect to me, then I remembered I have my LPF in line. Yessiree, resonant LPF is the premiere dirt tuner. The VT in the no diodes position is a wonder. It’s staying for the foreseeable future.

The VT in the no diodes position is a wonder. It’s staying for the foreseeable future.
I’ve recently done the opposite! Opened mine up to tame the fizz, and found that I prefer it with the fizz, though still trying to tweak it just right. Feel like I’m always fighting this pedal. I also love the no diodes setting, though. Certainly my favorite. Kinda wish it had a MOSFET setting, as it seems that I love every MOSFET dirt I’ve tried.
