Duran Durans’ John Taylor-wow.

If I was ever forced to have a "man-crush" on a bassist, it'd be a toss-up of JPJ and this guy, John Taylor.

Even though it sounds like they did something (slower tempo?) to try and make the vocals sound better, this band still sounds f'n strong. Especially, John Taylor! That Trace kit is nice!

Anyone else think John Taylor deserves more love in the bass community?

I mean, how many (relatively speaking) bassists from the 80's are still relevant by doing the same thing today as they were 40 years ago. Hell, JPJ can't even make that claim now.

Hmm, how about the fact that Jones is almost 15 years older, was making the rounds in TCV 12 years ago, plus all the little side projects like Seasick Steve, working with the Nickel Creek people, his two solo albums on King Crimson's label, and so on, at the same relative point in his life? It's not like he had anything more to prove. I'm not knocking Taylor, who long had a validity problem because he was associated with a pretty boy band; in fact he was the most impressive thing about them.
But you're comparing apples and oranges. You want to talk about "80's" bands? Three weeks ago I saw Tim Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, Steve Kilbey of The Church, David J of Bauhaus, plus Gerald Casale in Devo and the Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock sitting in with Blondie all in one day, and they all delivered the goods, and have stayed active in the meantime.
BTW, if you look for it, JT has received plenty of love and consideration here.

It wasn't really meant to be a comparison of the two musicians but I see it was easily contrived and worked into a chute toward an argument. However, you won't get one out of me.
All of your points are valid. I only suggested JPJ because he is among my top favored musicians. Yes, they are on different timelines, I agree.
I only recently (last 3 years?) developed an awareness/interest of JT's work. Duran Duran was not in my playlist growing up.
Summarizing, the point of the thread was only to share the video of them playing out, John Taylor's great sound (imo), and that it's cool they were involved with such a historic event.

I watched this last night and only really noticed his bass playing for the first time from this performance. It is good.

I suspect, however, we are not hearing the Trace kit at all: the real sound is coming from John's new Dingwall! (Dingwall owner here!)

JT is a bad, bad man. He brings the groove every single time.

He is the busiest bass player I like. What I mean by that is most of my favorite bass players mostly lay back and play relatively simple bass lines in the pocket.

Somehow, JT gets away with much busier lines than I usually like while still keeping the groove. Great player.

Yep, watching/listening to this made me want to at least try a Dingwall. Something again that I never had an interest in but now, I do.

Hate to break it to you folks, but JPJ's bass playing was only ever a very small part of his work in music. He's an arranger and producer. He is very much still relevant outside of the tiny, narrow bass-playing world.

JT is incredible at what he does. He's also a shareholder in the Duran Duran Corp, if I'm not mistaken.

in so many ways, John IS Duran Duran...they have been slaying it almost constantly for four times longer than the Beatles. (and the only weak patch where the one and and half albums he didn't play on)

I hope he continues to do his YouTube videos with anecdotes and analysis of his own work. The dude has great energy and his work is technically challenging. Well, it is for me, anyway. Hopefully after their tour he can put out some more content.
