E#. Wait, what?

The 7 in the key of F# major or the 3 in the key of C# major is an E#

Probably the most common place where to encounter it: do we agree A major is a fairly common key in pop? Isn't F# minor its relative minor? Well, the latter's dominant chord is C#7, whose 3rd is E#, no two ways about it.

It sounds like the guitarist messed-up. True that E# exists, though you have to go a long long way to find the word used, particularly in a standard band rock band.

See above. I concede common R'n'R rehearsal room parlance would probably spell that note F, but it would be incorrect.

Of course, having context would decide if note names as given to the OP are/were appropriate.

It'd be more conventional to describe E# / C / F# as F / C / Gb, but either way, that is a strange progression.

Except that we guitarists tend to dislike b's--so we usually refer to #'s.

Okay, like was stated many times depending on the key E# is totally legit(ex F#major) anyone who knows key signatures/reading music knows this, even middle school band kids(probably even some elementary level music student)...

Now if F# was called a Gb an F natural would be the correct 7th, but knowledge is power, YMMV, etc...ive never been ridiculed or beaten up for knowing theory either

I understand well why E# exists, though the times I use the term will be very few and far between. The difference between you and me is that I will be understood by the vast majority of people; you will come across as arrogant when you ridicule people for not understanding.

Yeah as some folks mentioned depending on the name of the key, an "F" is called "E#" or an "Eb" is called "D#" but technically they are the same notes.

I have a buddy, who commonly describes a I - IV - V " in the key of of "F" as "F" - "A#" - "C"....

Somehow this upsets me a lot more than it probably should. It feels like a photo frame hung slightly askew or the kerning in thi s sentence.

This is probably what the guitarist was doing..and trying to sound smart. I do it too; my first instinct is to call a note sharp except for very common flats (Bb, Eb,)

Ask your buddy if he can count.
F (1) - G (2) - A (3) - B (4)...

F to A is "3"...making his A# into a III+ not a IV.

In Croatia, we dont have #- we have "is". You can actualy meet up 3 people and they would all get into a fight around the H (B) note, like this:
A - Ais - H
A - H - B
A - Ais - B

They would all religiously protect their belief.
