Every night I would hide a radio under my pillow and listen to WLS and Wolfman Jack.
I listened to WLS too! "Windy City Weather!" This was 1970-73 and they played Top 40 and more. Still think about hearing "Spirit in the Sky" and other songs of that era, on WLS. It actually came in really well considering it was in Chicago. It's interesting to read about
WLS on Wikipedia and that era. WLS was the first U.S. radio station to play the Beatles. They were also the station that broke out Styx, who was Chicago.
Sadly, the station quit broadcasting Top 40 in the late 80's and eventually turned to talk radio format.
I also listened to WUOT-FM. They had a jock named Jamie Zappalac (what a name!) who played album rock late nights and weekends. I recorded a lot of it on my reel-to-reel and listened to it and played along.
Same era - early 70's - My sister's boyfriend had a huge album collection. Lots of crazy stuff- Zappa, Cactus, Beck Bogert and Appice, Stones, Allman Brothers, on and on. 250+ albums. He was gone a couple summers and left all the albums with my sister who was home for the summer from college, and of course I was in heaven and played that stuff constantly.
So between the radio and those albums, my brain was trained on album rock and Top 40!
Tell a Pal's story, Jeff! And have a great gig with Clint tonight!
