I tried a variety of settings of the HPF variable filter, while keeping the volume control on full. My understanding is that the Series 3 is a cut-only volume control with no boost.

I could get stuff happening with the HPF filter that I couldn't with rolling off the BX500 bass control. At a certain point, it became too much cut as it approached the highest setting of 140 Hz. I'm not sure what frequency this was, but the most I set it at was 12 o'clock.

Correct on the volume, always run it at 100%. I play mostly weddings and bar gigs, and I always run the fdeck HPF in my electric rigs. It cleans up my smaller amps and helps maintain the boom in all the crazy places they decide to throw parties in this town (especially those all-brick joints downtown). I also recently started gigging a BX500. I think the way the rolloff works on the FDECK is just different from what you can get making cuts at the amp, even on one with as much control as that Carvin.

Speaking of the BX500, do you ever run direct from the XLR out? It seems really, really hot for a pre- line out, even on 2 and with a passive bass. I'm shopping a good DI I can use in its place.

Interesting on the HPF Pre. I had no idea that so many here in the region were sweet on them. I have mine for my Kay. I have massive headroom on my main gig rigs so there is nothing to clean up.

And if you want to discuss hot DI's, the PF800 rig I bought for church is ridiculous at best. even pushing the -40db tab. Might as well use it as a speaker out ! rofl.

I'm in a 4-piece bluegrass band based in Greene County called Smoky Mountain Bluegrass--we play regionally, more often in NC, it seems, but working on more local gigs.
My list through 2013 includes one more show--Christmas Benefit at the Down Home in Johnson City, 12/21.
We're one of five groups performing, and it's going to be a blast--an eclectic set of sets including bluegrass, old-time, newgrass/contemporary folk, and party grass (my moniker for Ed Snodderly's group of friends).

Early Christmas present to myself: I just recently pieced this together, MIJ 1.625" P bass neck, MIM (short run active) J body, new Bart pups and pre, new black Hipshot hardware, all black screws. Other than drilling for string-thru-body ferrules... it's done and sounding like a million bucks! Plays like buttah and sounds better than any jazz I've ever owned. Cutting the thumbrest from a block of maple (without the proper tools) was the hardest part!


I'm SOOOOOO itching to do another build or at least some more mods.

I had intended on just commenting on Zoomie's pickup, but, Jedi sprung a quick one on me...Both beautiful basses!!
Now, Jedi has me GASsing for my own build!

I also made this for a lefty beginner... out of a 25 dollar pawn shop find.
After cleaning a ton of filth off, it got a new set of Mexi fender tuners, Hipshot-like bridge and roller tree that I had in my parts drawer. I flipped the nut and deepened the slots, and relocated the strap button. I wired the pup straight to the jack to get rid of the knobs.... wow did it sound good! I'm not a P bass fan, just can't get into the sound. But wired straight to the jack really gave this bass some BALLS! New GHS Boomers... I sold it to her for $100. I'm gonna spend some time giving her some free lessons too.

I have a high quality passive jazz harness just sitting at home......all alone.........in the dark.........collecting dust.

Thanks guys! If you're into vintage (tiny) frets, 1.625" nut-width, fast slim necks, I can't recommend the '70s Fender Precision ENOUGH! They play like US Laklands only with gloss poly finish. Thing is, they switched production to Mexico shortly after their release. I'm so glad I bought one when they first came out.

I'd love to try the shorter scale Dingwalls, Zoomie! I know I'll never be able to convert, been there done that and failed. But, the scale lengths seem PERFECT!
