easy songs!

Well the first few songs I learned how to play were:
Come Together - The Beatles
Don't Push, Scarlet Begonias(Grateful Dead cover) - Sublime
Sex on Fire, Use Somebody - Kings of Leon
Ramble On intro - Led Zeppelin
Muscle Museum - Muse
Jammin' - Bob Marley (I always warm up with this song, my favorite song to play right now)

"Smoke On the Water" is a classic but...

The actual bassline is pretty active(and different)than what you would think.I`m a beginner(again) and I won`t mess with it for a while. lol I remember trying to tackle it when during my first time learning bass(10 yrs ago)...it was a bugger! lol

Here are some great and fun "starter" songs:

Linger, Zombie - both by The Cranberries

Glycerine, Everything Zen - both by Bush

I Will Buy You a New Life, Father Of Mine, Wonderful - all by Everclear

Learn To Fly - Foo Fighters

Wonderful - Adam Ant

Name - Goo Goo Dolls

Where Ever You Will Go - The Calling

I Want You to Want Me - Cheap Trick

Walking On the Moon - The Police (first song I learned to play!)

:)

Are there no easy jazz songs?

If you want to learn an easy bass solo as a beginner I would recommend the bass solo in bang camaro's "push push (lady lightning)". Sounds cool, especially if you play it together with a guitarist.

Another good song to play is Englishman in New York. It has an easy motive, but I try to play it as "beautiful" I can every time. It also has a nice walking bass sequence in the middle

I'll add some more to my existing list:
Credence Clearwater Revival - Down on the corner
Pretty much any song done by the Pixies
Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
The Offspring - Pretty Fly(For a White Guy)
Slightly Stoopid - Wiseman or This Joint
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Grateful Dead - Fire on The Mountain
The Gnarls Barkley version of Gone, Daddy Gone. I'm not sure if The Violent Femmes version is played the same. The verse is all played on the A string.
A-----9-9---7-7---5-5---3 should be it, if I recall. Then slide down from the 3rd fret to the 9th fret and repeat.
If I remember more, I'll post them

Beastie Boys - Fight for your Right.

I taught that to my wife, who doesn't play bass (or any other instrument) and never did, on the spot, and she played it at a gig.

And some people here really need to learn Smoke on the Water. After 40 years of playing bass and guitar, I finally learned it last month. It's not a beginner song, if played right and in the pocket. And for anyone playing note for note, well.... good luck. I'm learning a bunch of Deep Purple N4N for a tribute, and I had to throw the towel in on that one. Got about 3/4 of it as played on studio recording, then realized the stupidity behind continuing to do that.
