All of the above, and also "why not?".

A bass for less than the price of a set of strings. Worst thing that happens is it's totally unplayable, and you can hang it on the wall or something.

I figure why not? I did a refin on one of my basses last year and I enjoyed the process so I plan on doing another one. As long as the neck is decent all the other parts can be swapped out if I choose (assuming aftermarket necks don't fit).

I'd rather make something that's my own than spend 800 on a new bass because the headstock says Fender.

Worst case scenario I'm out $20. That's less than a dinner out for me and the wife.

$17.99. Depends on whether you're inclined to round down by almost a dollar or round up by almost zero.

Though if you're talking total cost, sales tax in most states drives the price to between $18.50-19.50 anyway.

"Shouldn't" and "don't" are two different things. But I agree with you, rounding to the nearer value is the more effective way to do it.

That's a good question.

Even before I got into playing bass, I've enjoyed "working" on stuff. Modifying, customizing, learning and occasionally screwing something up. It can be therapeutic.

Plus, our minds tell us to be happy after getting a "deal".

it's funny...i spent approx $1K each to build a P bass a Jazz through warmoth, nordstrand, musikraft and parts shops to have a bass that doesn't say fender on it.

these 2 guys are all i need and they are guaranteed

plus an absolute joy to play
