JACO PASTORIUS JAZZ BASS - 1975 FENDER FRETLESS ORIGINAL
This is an original 1975 Fretless Fender Jazz Bass made in Fullerton California at the original factory. Leo Fender was still there and probably made this bass himself. It is made of burly maple throughout and all original electronics and parts to the best of my knowledge. Famed and legendary bassist/composer Jaco Pastorius (of Joni Mitchell and Weather Report) gave me this bass and it has been in a case since 1982.
I met Jaco Pastorius in the early 80's through my friend Melton Mustafa. Melton was playing trumpet in Jaco's band along with Andy Narell plus two other friends of mine, Billy Johnson and Mike Stern. Anyway Jaco and me talked up to the start of the concert and between breaks. We did not leave the dressing room during those periods, we were into a real connection on bass stuff, religion and some other things. When the night was over, still we were talking. Then I had to wrap up the concert crew, because I was working for SumArts, the production company that brought Jaco and the band to Rockefeller's in Houston. He came around, took me back to the room and gave me this beat-up looking fretless Fender Jazz Bass. I told him, I couldn't take it, but he insisted. So, I did. We kept in touch since then. One year, I think 1985, I took the bass with me to Hollywood to meet up with Jaco (he was doing a seminar at B.I.T. (Musician's Institute's of Technology's off-spring for bass). Jaco had finished and we were walking with about 25 other seminar attendees trialing us and was going to get him to sign the back of the bass. But then Billy Preston pulled beside us in his Excalibur and wanted to talk to me about working his gig. That was the last time that I saw Jaco...then, the phone rang, waking me about 4 am. one morning...it was Melton giving the tragic news. Jaco was one of the most spiritual, earthy people I have known. He will always be connected to my heart. There are so many memories and history in this bass. But now I must with it and pass it on.
