It really is. Best instrument I’ve ever owned. It’s amazing and well worth the money
HH. It’s like the H but with an extra H. Who doesn’t like extra?
Amount the neck tho/ classic/smoothies
The HH neck tho sound closest to the vintage stingray
I had a John East MMSR preamp in my 3 band Stingray. The electronics fit inside the cavity. I paired it with a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and it NAILED the pre eb classic Stingray tone. On top of that, mid/sweep controls gave it even more tonal flexibility. If you're looking for that Classic Stingray tone, John East preamp definitely does it. I sold the Stingray just recently though (put the original stuff back in of course) because I moved back to passive Fenders.
Yea, i go back and forth with the Stingray....some times I really dig the tone, other times its to aggressive, twangy, etc, and I return to a P or J. My only experience is with the older 3 bands and I haven't really had any exposure with other versions, so that could be part of it.
Not a huge fan of previous 3 band preamps (no experience with the new Specials). They're alright, but kind of a "situational tool" when you really want that aggressive tone. That's why I switched the preamp, I much prefer the 2 band ray preamps. But I still prefer a passive Fender
Yea, ive read that a lot here on TB about the older 3 bands, too aggressive for some. Not sure what ill do, im practical and dont buy/keep gear that I don't or wont use, but on the other hand Ive had this bass since 1996 and it has some sentimental value. Finally got to see some 5 stings in person. GC had two of them, one of each pickup config. I didn't remember the HH switch positions in the store, but after looking at the MM website from memory my two favorite sounds were the two jazz bassy spots where it was a single coil of each pickup. Followed by the standard Stingray back position. I've always thought I would be a HH guy but I think I liked the single H better. More room for popping and all three switch positions sounded good. The HH was Charcoal Sparkle, and was beautiful.
Gonna probably have to wait for a deal as I'm tapped out at the moment from buying new basses. But one of these are going to stay at the top of the list for sure.

Looks like the seller is from Washington state, and the only damage is a head stock chip
I reached out to that seller directly and he confirmed that the neck chip was the only visible damage.
Scott, I know you know best but I actually did buy, from a guy here on TB, what was essentially a customized one off SR5 HS.
It was in a color only used on a special EBMM guitar (lucky gold) and it had a completely glossed uber figured neck with a compensated nut (meaning to say it wasn’t just a neck off of a classic). The guy I got it from said he knew somebody at the factory or in marketing. I can’t remember. Sadly I passed it on to another TBer mostly because it was just to perfectly beautiful to take out of my house.
