I’m a hardcore burst/tort fan but I always liked the Charcoal Sparkle finish. Then I saw one in person at the local Guitar Center and loved it.

It seems as though there are a few sparkle fans in this thread who, intentionally or not, appear to be trying to turn me. Wouldn’t be the worst thing that ever happened to me. :D

Im very intentional !!!:smug::pNow go get yourself a charcoal sparkle and throw on a tort pickguard and come on over to the wonderful world of sparkles!!:hyper:

I’ve had my Special 4strg H for a bit now, and have mainly had Sunbeams on it. I dig the sound but looking to try something a bit more aggressive. I tried Slinky’s but thought they lacked a bit of the warmth or lows I get with the beams. Any suggestions? Maybe roundcore boomers(don’t like overly stiff), or maybe the stalwart 66’s?

Question for you all. I've had my SS4H since 2019 and love it. Over the years, I've noticed that while my other basses with rounds ('64 AVRI Jazz / US Geddy) sound pretty good with worn rounds, the SS4H almost seems to demand fresher strings (not 'new', but certainly more fresh than the others). For context, I use EB Hybrids on the Jazz basses and EB Super Slinkies on the SS4H; all with approx 0.008-0.010 relief, 3/32"-2/32" action.

I realize there are tons of differences here between the basses I referenced, but just seeing if anyone has had similar (or different) experiences. Not a knock on the SS4H whatsoever, I love the thing, just an observation I've personally made. Any opinions?

Ha! Yes, your influence in particular has been anything but subtle! :D

Gotta admit, I would not have guessed tort would work with the Charcoal Sparkle, but that dark brown tort looks surprisingly good.

One of the pleasures of talkbass. I was never big on burst but I saw yours and said Ernie Ball knows how to do it right.
I’ve seen so many burst that were just too clownish or the fade wasn’t subtle enough. .

Charcoal sparkle and tort was not a combo I would have thought would work. But it really pops !!!

Ironically..after 30-ish years of playing bass/weekend warrior, I recently tried my first set of SS Rotosound 66's. I went with the 40-100's, on a P bass with GZR's....so you can imagine the sound:) I really dig em and want to try the 45-105's next. My only concerns are: 1) Will they be too stiff, I'm used to Sunbeams and dont like string a whole lot stiffer than those(ageing hands), and 2) I've almost always used Nickle strings out of fear that SS wears frets, although this is prob much less of an issue with the Specials. How do the Nickle Roto's sound and feel by comparison?

Absolutely. I've learned a lot about things I might not have considered before without reading different opinions about them here on TB. Helps to have open eyes and an open mind, too, but unfortunately too many people seem to think there's virtue in keeping them shut tightly. Glad that TB, and the Stingray threads in particular, have a lower percentage of those types than the general population.

Agree 100% on the quality of a burst being important. I'm lucky that I found a bunch that were pretty well done, but I'm also picky and extremely patient. I'm happy to wait for what I really want to pop up for sale before buying, at least with bigger ticket items like basses. I can be pretty impulsive with smaller ticket items, like effects pedals. The number I have that aren't on my board (because I can't fit them all) is kind of embarrassing. And, unfortunately, still growing. :facepalm:

My feeling is, anyone who who likes stingrays or other non P or J basses are already open minded to begin with…
