Actually, did their HS models have a phantom coil in them? I’m guessing they did, but I don’t remember.

Actually, did their HS models have a phantom coil in them? I’m guessing they did, but I don’t remember.
They did - I saw an 5HS for sale here 2 days ago and looked up the diagram. The 5-way switch is identical to the 5HH, but have and S and Phantom in the neck position.

I've never owned a HH 'Ray - and after playing around with a few I'm not sure I ever will. I find the neck pickup just gets in the way and I don't really get any sounds with the neck pickup I can't get close enough to with the single H and tweaks to tone knobs and plucking position / technique.

I checked that one out also. Sonically, it could have been a great addition for me since I already have a 2007 ceramic SR5HH and a 2019 SR Special 5HH. An alnico model from the era between my two basses is something I’d like to add someday. But I’m not ready to buy a new bass right now and, sorry if this sounds shallow but, it’s not a color I’d buy.

Trying to wait until the new year to buy anything. And my next purchase will probably be a fretless
Nice looking bass. But my Sandberg fills this slot for me and weighs barely 9lbs. This one is over 10 lbs. That alone would make it a no go for me. They didn’t make that many . Finding a 5 string one 9lbs or less is like a needle in a haystack.
The Fretless BFR Specials are amazing in every way. If you can find one when you are ready, give it serious consideration .

I can’t knock those. The Jazz model Fretless sound very good. I’ve seen Marcus play his live .

The MM setup guide says to set the pickups to x height for the G string and then the bass side to be parallel with the pickguard. But what kind of parallel? Parallel as in sunken flush into the pickguard/body or parallel as in 90° with the pickguard which wouldn't really be posible because of the slant that setting the G string would create?

I think you're confused on the definition of parallel. Neither of your examples would mean parallel.
They mean parallel as in even from the bridge to neck side, and from the treble to bass side. So even all the way across. Not slanted at all. And certainly not flush with the pickguard. It's not an instruction on the height of the pickup, just an instruction on the angle (should be same height on all four corners).
That's the factor setting but you can do whatever you want. I think I have the bass side of the pickup very slightly lower than the treble side actually. Because I found the B string a tad louder when it was totally even

Yup, use your ears is always good advice for musicians!
Everyone's attack on the strings will be a little different, so no setting will work for everyone.
I have my pickup higher than EBMM factory setting as well
+1 got my first Special last year or so...when setting the pup to factory specs the E was too hot. Lowering it a bit and a touch of compression does the trick.Same with my 4H.
