On another note I tried D'Addario Half Round (ENR71-5) on my SS5H yesterday.
I had a Roscoe Beck a while ago that came with that the seller described as "half-round", really liked the strings, don't have that instrument anymore but as I wanted to try something new on the Stingray I went with those...well...now I know why they don't get the love around here, I think I read someone saying those strings took the life out of the Stingray and that's my experience as well.
I'll give them a few days of play but then will probably revert to the stock strings, or have my fav set of round steel

I use them on my HH and like them. But I play that bass primarily with a pick. The 5H has Ken Smith compressors. Brighter for sure
Oh interesting, I guess I was aiming at that Mike Gordon soft-bubbly tone but this really does not cut it for me

I have been in a Phish tribute for 3.5 years. I can tell you with some degree of certainty that Mike is nearly impossible to emulate perfectly. I had a Modulus Q5 with Slick Rounds and an Eden rig and still sounded like me. I decided to play what I like. I am not saying that "tone is all in the hands". I don't believe that. I think gear gives you different flavors of yourself though. What works for me won't necessarily work for you or for Mike for that matter.
Mike tells a story about playing through Phil Lesh's rig with Phil's bass and he still sounded like himself. Similarly, Phil playes Mike's bass through Mike's rig and he sounded like Phil.
I can get pretty darn close to the right tone with my SR 5HH and D'Addario half rounds but obviously that won't work for every one.
How's the stiffness of the D'Addario Half Rounds? I'm always curious about strings I haven't used before and finding out if I might like them.
For reference, I like a pretty stiff feeling string, such as DR nickel Lo Riders (my favorite overall string) and D'Addario Chromes (my favorite overall flat). I've seen some people describe GHS Pressurewounds as pretty stiff, but I wouldn't call them stiff and they're about as flexible a string as I'll use. At the other end of the spectrum, I absolutely hate TI Jazz Flats. They're way too flexible for me.

I don’t like overly stiff strings. I’d say these are pretty much like light gauge chromes.

But it sounds like the Half Rounds might have a looser feel then I prefer. Might have to look elsewhere.
...or else work on taming my gorilla-fisted plucking technique so I can use a looser string.

Turn up, lighten your touch and let the amp do the work!
I also dislike TI Jazz Flats. I'm not a flats guy at all, but I purchased a used Sterling Stingray34 HH from the Classifieds that had the TI's already on it. I hated it. It wasn't so much the tension, but more how uneven the tone was. The A, D, G strings produced a solid note while the E was growl city.
I would prefer either all solid or all growly, not a mix. I still have them put away and have thought about trying them again on a different bass, but I also feel like I would be wasting my time doing so as they would probably come back off immediately.
Couldn't help thinking about this Big Bang Theory moment ....
Haha! This came about due to a ton of outrage on the stingray Facebook group over still having the plastic on the guard. I agreed to film the peel whenever I decided to finally do it.
Plastic film peeling seems to be a polarizing thing. Im in the camp of if I see it, peeling it is top priority. Once removed, I can carry on with living.
