Another room would be very expensive . I have no more room on my rack or in my room.

I warned you…..EBMM basses are addictive. Outstanding build quality. They feel , play, and sound soooo good.
After you get more acquainted with her, I would love to know your favorite settings . On my 5HH , I find 1 and 4 to be my favorite.
Try Ernie Ball Slinky ( Cobalt ) flats. On my two fretted 5 string Specials, I use the lightest gauge 4 string set and add a single low B from the lightest 5 string set. I used to be able to order them single. These are flats that sound like rounds and can thump with the right amount of palm muting or some foam or felt under the strings .
Will do!! I have tapewounds on my P and have been itching to try some flats on the Ray. So far 1, 2 and 4 have been my most used positions, but I definitely need to spend more time experimenting, there are so many tone options with the pickups and EQ settings!

I've always found owners' preferences for the HH pickup switch interesting. It seemed to me that Position 4 (inner coils) and Position 2 (outer coils) were the least popular until very recently and Position 1 (bridge pickup) seemed to be the favorite even on HH models. Lately I've noticed more people talking about Position 4. I got my first SR5HH in 2007 and Position 4 was always my favorite but it seemed like I was in the minority among TB HH owners.
That one is still my clear favorite but my preference for the other four has always been pretty fluid, although I do tend to use all five on a typical gig, especially if I don't bring my pedal board. When I use the pedal board, I change pickup settings less frequently and mostly use my various OD pedals for changing my tone but, without my board, I change pickup settings all the time. These days I'm using Positions 2 and 3 more and using Positions 1 and 5 less. But a month from now, who knows?

LOL. I actually wasn't trying to say that, but I know I have the ability to be an ass so I guess it can sometimes come out even when I'm trying to keep it contained.I guess what you are saying is ..... "I told you so!!".
I know Position 4 isn't the classic Stingray tone and I'm not sure I can point to another bass and say it's similar to that. However, it's its own unique tone that I like a lot. And I could easily play an entire show set that way and be perfectly happy.
If anything, I think it can be kind of Precision-like but it has less mids than a basic Precision tone. I usually boost mids slightly when I use it and cut highs a little (in both cases, just a little, that's all that's needed).
FWIW, I find Position 5 (neck pickup) can also sound somewhat P-like, but in the opposite way as Position 4. It has more mids that Position 4 but it's closer to the neck and can be boomy with bass boosted. So I usually keep the mids flat, bass flat or cut just a little if I need to remove more boom, and the highs adjusted for the level of defintion I want.
I might have mentioned this a month or two ago in this thread, but I've been using Position 3 more often lately. It used to be my least favorite position but I've found uses for it, surprisingly on our quieter, lower volume songs. It's got a nice soft and warm tone, especially with a little mid and bass boost (again, just a little) when I lower my volume to be just the bottom layer of our mix on those songs.
But, like I said, after Position 4, my preferences for the other four change all the time. To be honest, I think that's one of the best things about the HH's. Every switch position is usable.

I feel like the 2/4 are the most notable, because at least for me, on an active bass where you have so much control over the low and high end, the neck pickup being 2 inches closer to the neck isnt a huge difference when you solo it or mix it in in Position 5 or 3, where as actually coil tapping into single coils actually changes the tone more signficiantly. I really wish they would throw the switching the 5 string models get on the 4 strings so you could series, split and paralelly just the 1 pickup in the brige /sweetspot position... plus then there would be more room to slap with the added tonal diversity so best of both worlds.

I’m a position 3 guy on my 4HH special. Mids bumped to 75-80%, same with the treble, and just goose the bass a little and I’m in tone heaven. Such a punchy, grindy, super p/j like tone. I hardly use the other positions. Typically though I’ve always been a two pickups full on kind of guy, considering Jazz style basses were my main thing for the last 25 years.
Sorry that I'm a bit off topic here..I'm looking at a Special locally..its got an ebony board and I was looking for maple board..but I like the rest of the bass...so was wondering if anyone has swapped necks and had no problems with fitment. I assume they should be interchangeable because they're factory basses and not boutique ..has anyone done this? Thanks..excited for a Stingray again.
Slap tone in position 3 is a good one as well.
Where are you going to get replacement Special 22 fret Roasted neck and board?
As long as it is another Special neck, it should fit. Make sure out is an Ernie Ball MusicMan Special .
I don't know if this is common, but my buddy has a mid-90s SR4 with an unfinished maple beck/board and the fret funk is permanent. Discoloration is to be expected on EBMM maple but maybe the roasted maple is a little more resilient?
I'm new to this forum and I know this is for MM Stingray Specials but I couldn't find a forum for Sabres. So I will ask my question here and hope for the best! Is there anything special about a 97' Sabre?
