I have just ordered a Stingray Special 5H in Amethyst Sparkle. Been eyeing for one for at least a year now and finally pulled the trigger. I'd love to have one with a matching headstock but seeing that over here in Germany they seem to only have one or two 5Hs in that color every 6-9 months or so I couldn't wait any longer.

By the way: I really like that they engineered a meatier G-String and tamed the highs. That's what I did not like about Music Mans up till now. Watching all of youtube (twice!) I do prefer the single 5H version... the B-String sounds just incredible and I did not care too much for the additional tonal options. I also focused on the maple vs. rosewood fretboards and seem to prefer the "fuller" sounding rosewood.

I went through several SRS 5s a couple of years ago, all of which were great, but kinda sold them when the project they were used on ended. I prefer the 5H because I find the selector switch useful (parallel, series, filter) and I never use the neck pickup on the 5HH. I had one 5HH that weighed less than 8lbs, and the weight and playability were perfect.

Fast forward a bit and with a few projects on the horizon, I decided to look for a 5H in the 8lb range. They are out there. I wound up with 2, somewhat accidentally, both of which weigh less than 8lbs. Have a gander:

I bought the natural one last week from a fellow TBer and, shortly after, the other showed up on TB. The burst one is in LA with a friend (that's where on project is), who picked it from the LA-based seller, so I haven't actually held or weighed it yet, but the seller said 7.7lbs. That's crazy light. The natural one is 7lbs, 15oz, also crazy light.

Not trying to corner the market on sub-8lb SRS 5Hs but it's convenient to have one in LA and here at home so I don't have to travel with one.

Of the 3 MM basses ive owned, all 3 had notable dead spots. Maple, rosewood, and ebony. Ebony was the worst.

What’s this dead spot that you speak of? That has not been my experience. I hope to keep it that way.

Love 'em both, but that burst is verrrrrrry nicely done and the black pickguard matches the finish pefectly (said the hard-core tort fan! ). You got a beautiful pair of basses!

Dead spots mean different things to different people. Not every note is going to sustain exactly as long as others on every spot on the fretboard.

I've had some people call something a dead spot that I would never even notice. I've also played and owned basses with obvious dead spots that were very noticable to me (including some EBMM basses).

My Stingray Special has very even sustain across the board, even compared to boutique instruments I've played. One of the reasons I love this particular bass.

Some of it is luck of the draw

Oh hello friends. I posted in the Stingray Club thread but I didn't see that there was a special one. This is my new number one. I have pretty much fallen in love with it. It is my first EBMM bass and likely my last unless I get rich some day, but it is perfect.

Dead spots mean different things to different people. Not every note is going to sustain exactly as long as others on every spot on the fretboard.

I've had some people call something a dead spot that I would never even notice. I've also played and owned basses with obvious dead spots that were very noticable to me (including some EBMM basses).

My Stingray Special has very even sustain across the board, even compared to boutique instruments I've played. One of the reasons I love this particular bass.

I can tolerate dead spots on the g string as long as they are not too bad. I can't tolerate dead spots on the E string. I have had a few with dead spots on the E string A note before. I didn't own them for very long.

Agreed, a dead spot on the E or B string is the worst

I'll make the same comment I made in the other thread - it's amazing how much prettier the Charcoal Sparkle is in person compared to in pictures.

Curiously, my Special has a dead spot on the octave on the D string. It's the first electric bass I've owned with one. Not a deal breaker for me, as there's so much to like about the instrument other than that. I approach it like wolf tones on my uprights. Just like I wouldn't sell my 1870 or 1970 basses because they both have wolfs (wolves?) on the octave A, I wouldn't do the same for my 4H. Mitigate, work around, learn to live with, and still try to sound good. My $0.02, anyway.

Now I just can't decide between purple sunset or the new black/maple combo.

There's something about that purple sunset that is calling me! But, I am wondering how it will age. The black, of course, is a classic and never dies. However, no one has the black in stock and CME says it won't arrive until August

Honorable mention goes to "Candyman" but I don't like the painted headstock, plus this thing would stick out like a sore thumb in my apartment.

Hahaha I’m just not a red person. Sneakers, shirts, guitars, just not me. Contrary, to that fact, I have always really liked dark purple.

Just played a few random rosewood Specials at GC just to get the feel and sound. They definitely get the nod!! The rosewood specials feel better than the maple, IMO. They had the black with the black headstock. Meh looked kinda cheap IMO. Last year’s pastel colors look amazing.

I think I’ll be buying the purple sunset from SW tomorrow.

Well that’s the good thing about buying new. You can return it unscathed. I just put in my time trying them out and I really really like them. Plus I had one before and it was by far the best Stingray I’ve ever felt. it was just my first stingray and I didn’t know what I was doing. Today I just wanted to hear the sound of a few rosewood examples and they sound amazing.

Now you know you don’t have to convince me on how great they feel, sound, and play. I’ve been saying this for quite a long time .

I love my 2 rosewood fb SR Specials. They might be my 2 favourite Stingrays in terms of feel & sound, particularly my SR5. It just plays a little different than the others.
