EBMM StingRay Special Club

Last year, however, I went whole hog on BEAD 4 bangers and have been really into the tone of the solo'ed bridge pup on my Sadowsky Metroline MM/J.......... then fell in love with an 8lb 4H in Pacific Blueburst and will have it in about 10 days. I have been unable to find answers to the few questions I have, either on the EBMM site of through searching TB and am hoping for some guidance.

-what are the frequency centers of the 3-band preamp?
-is the pre boost only or boost/cut?
-can the bass be played without the pre/without a battery?

Not sure on Frequency Centers but from using they are interactive so not sure how important center freq. is; Have some memory of reading a post that claimed 40hz Bass 500hz Mid and 4khz treble but don't quote me just turned 70 and memory may be shaky :)

They are Boost/Cut

Special is Active only; need 2 Batteries to Play it is 18v

1) Don't know but im sure its on their website
2) Boost and cut with a center detent
3) No, and its 18 volt (2 batteries)

Only you can decide what works for your particular circumstances, but if you can afford it, I'd choose a used Special. They can be had at prices well below those of a new instrument, and IMO they're far better than the Ray34. If it was me, I'd always be wondering if I made the wrong decision by going with the cheaper option -- but again, that's just me. Also, the Special would be a good instrument if your musical journey eventually leads you into band situations.

I have recently installed them on a bass and have the same issue. Iso alcohol didn't help. But they sound great.

Hi peeps

Was just wondering if any knows the size of the holes in the bridge? The ones the strings fit through. I've been trying for weeks now to find this information and can't seem to find it. I basically want to know what the thickest strings I can fit through the hole would be? I know I can't fit anything bigger than a 115ish onto the saddles but I want to get some tapered strings to deal with this. I'd like to know the size of the holes though as the entire string will need to pass through this. You'd think this would be easy information to find but seemingly not.

Odd. D’addario Pro Steels, medium gauze w/ .135 B string easily goes through the bridge holes as well as fitting the saddles.

Currently, my Special is at my band leader’s studio, or I’d measure the holes for you.

“I’d be glad to measure the holes Tuesday for a like on my post today”! :roflmao: :roflmao:

(That’s a reference to an old Popeyes cartoon character. Not the fried chicken place….😁)

It’s a five.

Hard to imagine the holes on a fiver would be different on the four. Extra machining costs, seems it would be easier for the bridge maker to make the holes the size on both.

But….

Regardless, I’ll measure the holes on my Special’s bridge and get back to you, unless someone beats me to it.

I'm looking at using a 4 for BEAD tuning. Well actually AEAD. As my guitarists are awful human beings. 🤣🤣🤣 I think im just going to have to cope with floppy strings. 🫠

Luciano or Bob? Makes a difference.

I have always had rounds on my basses. Love the feel and sound of Slinkys and XL's, especially when fresh. I have had chromes and TI flats on other basses in the past, neither were better sounding than rounds. The TI's were pretty nice, though. These cobalt flats sound good, but are not rounds. The Bongo came with old-ish XL rounds, which sounded good enough for the first week or two while determining if I really liked the bass (I do). I figured I would give these new-fangled cobalt flats a whirl before putting on a fresh set of Slinkys. We'll see how it shakes out after a month. Try new things, etc.

If they don't pan out, they'll be posted for cheap in the classifieds and are cut for an EBMM bass. Don't flat people leave them on for years at a time and want grungy...er...gently used strings?:roflmao:

This will give y'all a good laugh. My band played a Woodstock-themed festival at a local winery last month. Our playlist was perfect, all songs from 1967 to 1971 and about 1/3 of them were played at Woodstock.

All but one is us made at least minimal effort to dress for the part, but I went further than the rest of them. I had John Lennon style sunglasses, too, but we closed the show and it was already dark when we started, so I never wore those.

Playing my Special wasn't period correct, but at least the burst and tort made it look close enough. Sounded glorious playing at outdoors volume, too. :bassist:
