Wow! Love that finish. How do these leave the factory with such a poor setup? I've seen similar comments here and in reviews, and it just boggles the mind for $3000 instruments.


I've been eyeing the "dazzler" finish. On Ernie Ball site it looks quite pink, but in other photos it looks more white. From what I can tell, it's actually white with pink sparkles and that sounds deadly to me.

I've been seeing these reports of poor setup and needing neck shims for about a year now. Wonder what might have changed?

I've had only one brand Stingray Special and I literally unboxed it, tuned it, and took it to a gig. It was great.

A few days later, I did do a little setup tweaks to make it more comfortable to me (a touch a relief, raised the action a touch, a touch here, a touch there….) and even kept the same strings on it for a couple more weeks.

Who knows….

Not just EBMM but most manufactures including 'Custom Types" can have Bass setup to their specs but travel and changing inconsistent weather can cause problems sometimes depending on distance, handling and severity of weather changes.

Yeah, I agree, I think the setup on mine was mostly affected by the weather, going from California to Canada. I adjusted the truss ever so slightly and it's perfect now.

Depends on how low you like your action. The lower it goes, the more perfect the bass needs to be.

Might have something to do with wood and climate, and an instrument made in costal California, stocked in a warehouse in Indiana and then shipped to Canada. That little wheel on the bass of the neck is pretty easy to adjust. Or maybe they just do crap set-ups. I don't know.

Every bass, new or previously owned, that I order from another region needs a slight truss rod adjustment — Music Man, Fender, Nash, Lull, Ibanez, and others. Only the bass I received directly from EBMM in (relatively) nearby SLO came perfectly set up. YMMV.

I find with mine 5/64 E and 4/64 G[ approx. 2mm/1.6mm] to be best combo of tone playability; did get it to 4/64 E and 3/64 G but felt loss of tone and no real playability advantage [measurements are no capo but did use capo when adjusting]

My neck relief is .008

PS: I also adjusted D & A by feel for Bass Radius and transition between strings they are in-between E&G measurements

I don't Tap or slap/pop [much] players who do may prefer lower

I just put on LaBella LTFs. Are they supposed to sound this way? Finger picking at the bridge pickup.

I have only had rounds or Fender flats on basses before, so pardon my lack of experience. These seem really dull out of the box, but maybe I just don't know these strings.

I absolutely love LaBella flats, on a P bass. I think they are really boring on a stingray. Not bad, just very vanilla. And I've tried them like 4 different times. For me the best flats on a stingray are Chromes. I've tried them all. They just have the perfect balance on a stingray of still sounding like flats, while having that tiny little bit of treble/metallic peak that stimulates the natural stingray tone. Others will say cobalt flats, but I just really don't like that string. But they do sound pretty good after they get really broken in. But I don't like them for the first couple of months. Chromes get where I want them to be in less than a week.

I have a StingRay with TI Flats, one with Slinky Cobalt Flats, and one with LaBella Low tension flats. . The LaBellas are my least favorite. The others really sing . The Labella's are great for recording . I might just go back to rounds on that bass and maybe string it E-C and see how I like that.

I think Labella's are just best on a passive bass. I had them on my Joe dart and they sounded amazing.

Again I highly recommend the extra light Chromes. You'll hate them the first day but within just a couple hours of play they really start to open up and sound amazing. The tension is perfect too, just a tad above LTF.

I love La Bellas on my Mustang, but they wouldn't be my first choice on a StingRay. They'd sound pretty cool after breaking them in for a month or two though, and I bet putting the pickup in series would help.

Greetings, all. I've finally gotten to the point where I'm ready to place an order for a "Custom Design Experience" Stingray (mainly for the SLO neck). I've narrowed it down to 3 possibilities and was wondering if anyone has one of these colors that they could post a pic of so I could see what it looks like in "real life" vs. these mock ups on the website (the EBMM color names: "Golden Delicious Pearl" and "Diesel Blue Pearlburst"). Also trying to decide if the blue looks best with the chrome hardware or the black.
