Absolutely killed it on the fretless 5HH last night... Lots of compliments on the tone. The HH lets me go from funk to jazz quite smoothly

I recently picked up a used Stingray 5H (pre special) at my local music store. Love this bass. Like it so much that I'm thinking of adding a new Stingray special 5h or 5hh to my collection. My concern though the revoiced preamp on the specials. I've heard it described as more "polite." What does this mean? I love on on my 5h the treble control is voiced at a really high frequency. From what I hear on youtube demos, it seems EB has moved the frequency center lower to match industry trends. I absolutely hate the way most modern treble controls are voice at 3-5 k. Very harsh for boosting. Are my concerns valid?
EBMM StingRay Specials are the life of the party. Mixes well with others, impeccable manners, great rapport. Pre-Specials are more the party crashers. Brash, loud and noticed.
Your concerns are very valid , however I find the Specials to have more headroom . They are voiced less harsh and metallic sounding in the trebles . For me it’s much more pleasing to the ear. A lot less ear fatigue.
You will have to see what works best for your needs.
To me the Special sounds like a hybrid of a 3 band and a 2 band Stingray. Leaning more towards a 2 band.
I’ve A/B a 97H 3 band and 2019 special HH forward and backwards. I dial in the tone on the bass and/or amp then just switch to the other bass and listen again. Kind of a IF I use this bass how do I dial in the proper tone for the song. The special HH is obviously more versatile but only using the bridge pup to make it apples to apples. The pre special is a Granny Smith. Great for cooking, a little tart and is a fine apple. By nature the HH is Honey Crisp or Fuji. Still a tad tart but sweeter. With the special HH you can add tart to taste and it will turn Granny Smith. It gets there when you ask of it. If you keep both bass eq ‘s the same and compare, the special is less in your face and subjectively more musical. It’s a sports car with a good ride.
For me, it's the pre-Specials that can be harsh.

Can you still get that high end sizzle? Or have they voiced that a lower frequency now? I think there is a trend away from the 7.5-10k voicing that I like. to me a treble control voice at 4k is only good for cutting.
We all hear things differently. Like treble controls to be voiced higher...like from 7k and up. Lot's of modern pre amps are moving that down to around 3-4k. That right in the region that a lot of FOH engineers will pull out of a mix to ease the pain. My question that I'd like to have answer before buying is where is this treble control voiced on the specials. If its a lower frequency that the older models, well that's a deal breaker. Too much 2.5-3k is the reason I can't stand my l-2500's anymore.
I just saw someone online say that cobalt flats will chew up fretboards, now I'm scared lol. Anyone here have this problem?
I just want to know where the center/knee frequency of the new pre amps treble control is voiced. If they've moved it lower....its a no go for me. 2.5-5k sucks......that's the current trend in voicing. It's harsh to my ears and only good for cutting.Love this! Nailed it!

Hopefully you can find somewhere to listen to a special. I’m super biased to a SR in general but the HH special (which is my wife’s bass but she lets me play it sometimes
) is so veeerry nice.
