What do you guys like more? Brown or red?

My special came with the brown tortoise pick guard but I can’t help but think it looks like animal print.

I prefer the brown, but truthfully I wish there was a third option somewhere in between those two. The red looks a little too red right now (maybe it just needs to fade?), and the brown could use a little pop of color. I think the red would look really nice if the burst had some red in it too.

I like the brown better, I think that red really needs a traditional sunburst finish to work. I wish EBMM had a little less yellow in their tort, which is why black edged out the tort on my burnt ends for the last couple of years (pics posted many, many pages back in this thread). But… I have a feeling for change right now, so the tort is likely to make a reappearance.

This might be in the wrong spot sorry guys, buy does any one know if a WD Music Stingray Classic pickguard would a 2015 Ray..?

I've tried emailing WD Music directly, and they don't even know...

It should be the same. Call Ernie Ball Music Man, they answer the phone and just ask them if they are the same (without mentioning WD).

I don't like the red. The brown is the newer factory pattern right? It does sometimes look weird. Chandler is their OEM manufacturer. Their default brown would be best and still keeps OEM equipment on your expensive bass. Looks like this: Chandler OEM Tortoise Shell pickguard for Music Man Stingray Special Bass *MINT* | Reverb

Have you seen that color with a black guard? I love tort but black looks awesome on burnt ends/ old school tobacco.

Agree with @Mike Vee . I don't think tort -- of any color -- suits that particular color bass. Black would work better, methinks.

New to the club and fairly new to the wonderfulness that is a Stingray Special (although not new to EBMM). I could use a little help, please.

I have a 2019 'Ray 5H. It is Charging Green and I'd like to replace the pickguard. The problem is, I can't remove the selector switch knob. It's my final step. I've tried the usual methods, including having a friend use pliers to hold the bar under the knob while I use pliers to lift the knob itself. Did not work. It appears pretty well fixed in place, but I can't imagine that removing it would be hard.

Short of grinding the thing off, can anyone offer some suggestions?

Maybe try soaking it in some penetrating oil of some kind or even WD40? Maybe add some heat? Isn't it plastic? If so, I'd melt it off before I broke out the grinding devices. Vice grips would be a good tool to use so it doesn't slip.

Decided to try Group V flats on my Stingray Special 5H. At home I thought I would like them, even if I didn’t feel the low B string sounded quite right. However once I got into a band setting, I quickly realized these were not the strings for this bass. There were just odd dead notes in random places on the fingerboard. I’ve never experienced that before. Also didn’t really like the increase in stiffness compared to other strings I prefer. I love the Cobalt Flats on my Special 4HH, and maybe I should have just gotten those. However, I’m now trying DR Pure Blues on the 5H, and at home they seem to be better and more even across the neck. Oh well, live and learn.

Yeah, strings can be a lifelong quest. And you never know until you try them. Hopefully the DR Pure Blues will work out for you.
