I love my cobalt flats, and they probably last long enough to warrant the price. If you don't need new strings immediately, there's always a chance that they'll randomly go on sale on Amazon or Sweetwater.

Otherwise, if you need new strings immediately and you really want them to be flats, I'd try Chromes. Look for ECB81-5. I haven't personally tried them yet, but they're on my short list of strings I want to check out next.

I haven't had Chromes on my Special yet (I have a set of three year old Nanowebs on it that I don't want to take off because they still sound so good), but I've had them on my ceramic 5HH a couple of times and I thought they sounded great on it. That bass has an overall more aggressive tone than my Special, but they do overlap a lot. Based on my experience, I'm guessing that they'd also work well on a Special, especially if you like a stiffer feeling string (which I do).

The price is worth it [in proportion to cost of Special] unless you don't like them

Colbalt flats on my Special 4H as well. one trick I do is put clear nail polish over the silk ribbon to help keep it from fraying.

So, this one actually did come with the tort pickguard, but only because I planned to switch it with the black one. Should have snapped a photo before the swap. It actually looked kinda sweet, but very busy.

The black pickguard is perfect! Wise choice IMO.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like you made the right choice. The tort guard on the black bass adds a little bit of visual interest, and the black guard on the gold bass matches really well with the block inlays and black hardware.

So I saw Warmoth did a video about burnishing necks and gave it a try on my stingray. Wow! What a difference. Started at 800 grit incrementally sanded up to 3000. Then some oil and some wax. It's less satin and more of a semi gloss now. Gives a little bit of grip and feels like it won't absorb as much moisture. I used food grade mineral oil and bowling wax. Loving it!

I have Chromes on my Stingray and like them much better than Cobalt Flats, FWIW. I tried pretty much every flat across many (different model) Stingrays and like Chromes best. I do the ECB80 set (VERY flexible) and replace the 60 with a 55 (even more flexible). Cobalts are cool too though. Chromes break-in to be a lot warmer but still have just enough edge, unlike the traditional LaBella/Legends sound, which is great on a P-bass but not for me on a Stingray.

Neat. I like the matte texture of the neck as-is, but I have to say, the grain on yours is fantastic.

My special came with the brown tortoise pick guard but I can't help but think it looks like animal print.
