Let me suggest more mids and less bass, with treble to suit. With low-mid heavy humbucker giutars, I like to get a little on top of them tonally.I can't get my 4H special to "sit" in the mix. What are your EQ settings?
Rounds do sound great. If they didn’t we wouldn’t even have purchased our Specials in the first place.Well, the EB Cobalt flats are off. I still like them, but after playing my Old Smoothie with rounds yesterday I just have to accept that the only bass I like rounds on is a Stingray, and that for me the Special just loves the rounds! (In my head anyway).

Go with what you like .
I’m still going with the Cobalt Flats as I prefer the feel and tone.
How do you have the relief set? This must be an issue on the 5 strings. My 4 is slam bang low with no mods or shim.View attachment 3266259 View attachment 3266260 View attachment 3266261 So after modding my saddles so they go all the way, I decided to put on some new nickel lo riders last night, and I while I was at it, I put a whim in the pocket, using a piece of the cardboard from the string packet. Now the action and neck is exactly where I like it, and I have room for more adjustment if needed. Before the g saddle was all the way down!
I wonder if this is only an issue on the 5?I’m on my 3rd 5HH special with
buzzing issues but mostly high action. all 3 had a neck pitch issue and I’ve had to raise the action to keep the buzz on the B string to a minimum.
Lowered the pickups to cancel any magnet pull. It’s going to take a shim and maybe a plek job to get it right.
I still love the bass and will spend a little more money to get mine right.

No issues like this with my 5H Special; it arrived set up very well. I changed the strings to Elixirs, gave things a small tweak, and it's been good-to-go since.
I recently sold my 4 Special. Just didn’t bond with it and it definitely had buzz. I worked with it for a while, but it definitely needed some additional TLC.I’m on my 3rd 5HH special with

FWIW, my issue is seeing the fret markers in a dark room! That roasty, toasty goodness, needs some white side dots, if you ask me. Anyone got any ideas?
Edit: I looked at fret markers online but never used anything like them so I'm hesitant.
